Prince Ryu's Heritage Spurs Discourse, Disavowing Controversial Ancestor

5548.3.16. - Gongmangdo - His Grace Prince Ryu Bitsaeon (pictured Left, spelled 柳빛새온) has generated controversy about his heritage due to the progenitor of his clan, the Myeongju Ryu Clan. The Clan was formed by Prince Ryu's ultimate paternal ancestor, Ryu Minhee (pictured Right, spelled 柳珉熙, formerly selucianized 'Lu Min-Wei') in the year 3583. This is of considerable objection as Ryu Minhee was a key Kyo nationalist that played a critical role in assisting revolutionary Lee Dong-Seung in taking power in the 3608 Great Kyo Revolution. While the 3608 Revolution remains commemorated every year among the people and is particularly popular with the New Left in the Baegukese political climate, it is seen as having negative impacts for the minority Draniano and Penru population. Indeed, the Imperial Family have since the Restoration always steered from official endorsement of any related ideas or organizations. Thus, the induction of somebody sympathetic to the Kyobando cause into the Imperial Family would invite significant worry and regretability among minority groups.

Penru advocacy groups like N'garin Hokto officially lodged letters of protest and called on the Prince to renounce Kyobandoism. In response to the public outcry, Prince Ryu publicly released a statement on social media and through the MOA (Ministry of Official Affairs) officially disavowing the Kyobando Manifesto and claiming that his ancestor's actions were 'deeply regrettable'.

Quote:Upon the considerable public discourse surrounding my direct parental ancestor and the patriarch of the Myeongju Ryu Clan, Ryu Minhee, I find it necessary to inform all subjects clearly and deliberately of my deep thoughts on the subject of his political involvement in the Kyobando movement. No man is perfect, and I feel that Ryu Minhee's decision was truly a grave mistake one must ponder and examine with deep regret. Acting to enable the revolutionaries during the tumultuous year of 3608 by deceiving the government and conspiring with the disloyal elements of the military, my ancestor ultimately chose the dereliction of duty to the nation and instead helped a radical sect unlawfully seize power.

We cannot choose our ancestors, but we can choose how we address them. In order to uphold the sacred principle of Hyo (孝) filial piety I will of course continue to sacrifice to Ryu Minhee among our ancestors. However, I will make it clear that I completely repudiate and disavow the Kyobando ideology, which is the antiquated and discredited notion that the Dan Peninsula is somehow too small for the three national ethnicities that make up the nucleus of what it means to be a subject of the Emperor of the Kingdom of Great Baeguk. As Prince of the Kingdom of Great Baeguk I will forever remain committed to ensuring that the nation is of all three peoples and that it maintains the fraternal spirit between all Baegukese ethnicities that has made our Kingdom so great.

Supporters sympathetic to the Kyobando Manifesto have in turn condemned Prince Ryu's condemnation. Sage Eulji Geurinbi from Myeoggi Province's Gwail County proclaimed the following on his KofiTalk:
Quote:It is a travesty and truly revealing of the modern decay of all our Kyo values to see the SODOMITE 'prince' insult his great and noble ancestors. Ryu Minhee is a HERO for his noble service in leading the revolutionary struggle of the Kyo people in the overthrow of the false regime and the glorious restoration of 3608. The sodomite prince disgraces his office, disgraces his ancestors, and disgraces our nation with these poisonous words. We call upon God Almighty and His Imperial Majesty the Emperor to relieve Prince Ryu of his position and to revive the great traditional practices of HETEROSEXUAL relations in the Imperial Court to strengthen and restore our Kingdom.

Once again, as the Kyo majority population in Baeguk grows relative to minority populations and the political strength of the New Left is renewed through the increasing popularity of the Hongik Party in the polls, new questions continue to emerge over history and the lens through which such events need be viewed. It appears as reckoning with the difficult and multifaceted past will only continue to form a central part of Baegukese politics.

Karnibal a Reminder to the Nation of Draniano Culture's Vibrance and Endurance

Adolfo Kangjon Sosil 尙狼岡田少室  記者, Sinsu - Garish, colorful masks of motley purple, gold, and emerald filled the streets. Bright banners of ticker tape painted like the Obang, the traditional Five Directions, sporadically waved through the crowds as thousands of crucifixes bearing the saints were hauled out by revelers. Brass bands marched with their horns held high, blasting the greatest hits in the Kaldé songbook. As the masses converged at Sinsu's St. Sunwoo's Cathedral, His Holiness the Second Patriarch of the Baegukese Universal Church, Zebastian Huanak Johan, stepped forward to make remarks about today, Martenal Gorodan. Today the entire Baegukese nation was once more reminded of the potency and enduring cultural power of one fifth of her body, the Draniano people. This was Karnibal.

Karnibal (Traditional Draniano: ㅋㅇㄹᄾㆁㅃㅇㄹ) is, of course, the holiday season beginning the eve of Soot Thursday and concluding with a bang on Martenal Gorodan ('Fat Tuesday' in Draniano). While Martenal Gorodan is a state holiday, observance varies wildly across Baeguk. The cities of Taedo and Ilbae practically have no celebrations to speak of. Gongmangdo traditionally had little celebration, but recent years have seen some small if mostly casual events pop up around St. Onan's Cathedral, nominal center of the Baegukese Universal Church (EKP). Seongtaek takes 3 days off and musters an impressive display, with extensive floats, firework displays, and legendary boat races in the waters of Santa Sharika Harbor. However, there is of course no match in the entire nation for the celebrations of my hometown, the city of Sinsu. For the entire week the city grinds to a halt and becomes a non-stop parade. The dancers and floats take over the city as Kaldé swells the streets, the smells of classics like Tteokbokki, Dalgona, and Ghurros waft through the air, and crowds wave high icons of Eliyahu, Fotisia, and manifestations of God the Supreme One, Monas Magnum.

Indeed, Karnibal was practically woven into the cultural fabric of our ethnic community. As a people of faith, the celebration offered a final opportunity to partake in rich foods and extravagant entertainment before beginning the spiritual task of reflection and self-denial during Repentance (also called Lent). Karnibal served first as a way to unite us with Hosians around Terra, and later as a conduit to express our unique identity and anger at Egelian imperialists during the colonial period and as a way to integrate many unique aspects of Peninzulare, Mestizo, and Creole culture that were threatened.

For the rest of the nation - a supermajority of Baeguk is Kyo, and a good ~13% are Penru - the perennial explosion of Karnibal brings significant cultural exposure to the Draniano community. The celebration, particularly in cities like Sinsu and Seongtaek, prominently display our symbols and traditions to the whole world. Processions full of meaning, religious imagery, and the connection to Soot Thursday and Repentance introduce Hosian liturgical elements to participants and spectators who may not otherwise engage with the faith.

For the Draniano Hosian community, this heightened visibility serves as both an invitation and a reminder of the Draniano People's deep-rooted cultural influence and the central role to which the Church has been a guiding force and steady rock in maintaining our proud institutions. Visitors and participants in Karnibal celebrations are often exposed to both the deep cultural and religious significance of the day, even amidst the jubilant chaos of the parades.

With this in mind, let us take pride and honor in being able to participate in this day of jubilation passed down from our ancestors. Karnibal continues to be a beacon of Draniano culture in Baegukese society, and if we keep it it shall be for many years longer.

Is 'De-coupling' the future of Baeguk's place in the WDU?
Speculation mounts following gov's decision to appoint new envoy to WDU's Economic Commission

The People's Party-CoEnlightenment coalition government has officially nominated Gwisil Ggotgureum as Baeguk's new principal envoy to the WDU's Dovanian Economic Commission. Ms. Gwisil is a known proponent of the 'De-coupling' movement in Baeguk, which seeks to decrease the national economy's dependence on the WDU's common market system. The move comes on the heels of criticism of the perceived 'economies of stagnation' that some analysts and politicians claim are apparent in such nations in the common market like Mikuni, Lourenne, Seko, and Kazulia.

Her nomination is an indication that the even liberal Co-Enligtenment Party is feeling pressure to move to a more protectionist stance to reduce dependency on the other 'unreliable' WDU markets to focus on a 'Baeguk First' policy. Whether or not the government embraces this potential rejection of the free common market policy that has dominated the KGB's outlook for 2 centuries remains to be seen.

New Jade Mines at Hwaram to Open South of Ganga-si
News has emerged that the government of Gonggi Province has officially approved for the opening of the Hwaram (滑巖) Jade Mines, marking a hopefully positive development in the still-flagging mining industry of the Mioksan Mountain Region. The region, which was transformed into a powerhouse of Baeguk's developing economy in the early 54th century, experienced a subsequent decline in employment and mining in the 55th and early 56th centuries as demand for rare earth and metals like cobalt, zinc, and copper in the region was upset by new influxes from the WDU's common market. With increasingly protectionist trade policies being passed, however, many believe that Baeguk could be on track for a domestic revival. A deposit of jade had been discovered in 5554, but inspections by the government for safety of the location have just concluded. A grant has been given to the Imugi Excavation Group and Namgu Mining and Extraction Corporation (NMEC), formerly known as the Changuk Metal and Mineral Corporation (CMMC), to develop the deposits. Analysts hope future developments like this could signal increased investment in Baegukese domestic industry.

Myeoggi Provincial Assembly officially bans 'Transgender Operations' to Condemnation
In what has been protested as a negative setback for civil rights legislation, a provincial ban on the ability of publicly-funded hospitals to provide gender-affirming care to individuals experiencing gender dysphoria has been passed in the Myeoggi Provincial Assembly. Myeoggi and Haegi Province are the only two provinces currently banning such healthcare ever since liberal legislation in the Senate delegated regulation of gender-affirming care to the Provincial and City Governments. Taedo city is considering a ban while a prospective ban in the Rokgi Provincial Assembly was narrowly defeated laset year by a vote of 79 in favor - 84 in opposition. Civil rights activists have declared that they intend to file with the national court system in a bid to appeal and fight to declare the move a violation of constitutional rights.

Baeguk's 'Grammar Police' Wage War on KRAY
5560.11.6

KRAY (real name: Rhee Narachan), one of Baeguk's most celebrated entertainers and rappers, is under fire this week, becoming a subject of ridicule in a scathing PSA issued by the Committee for the Standard Baegukese Language (CSBL), the nation's long-reviled no-fun-allowed 'Grammar Police'.

The reason?

The CSBL complains that his new hit single, 'Paradise' (Baegukese: 樂園) is 'disrupting the education of Baegukese youth and clouding their ability to speak the Standard Baegukese Language properly'.

In his song, the word for "Paradise" is used for a total of 12 times. In every case, KRAY pronounces the word for Paradise (樂園) as "Nagweon" (낙원). In their PSA, the CSBL maintain that the characters "should and must always" be pronounced "Ragweon" (락원), with an "R" sound at the front.

The CSBL cautions that this is improper language as it breaks the Initial Consonant Rule (頭音法則), in which speakers of Standard Baegukese are required to enunciate every consonant beginning a word as it is spelled. This is not the first time that KRAY has been chastised for violating grammatical laws. One of his earlier hits, "Hot Goodbye" (뜨거운 離別), was also criticized for mispronouncing the word for 'Goodbye' (離別), conventionally pronounced 'Ribyeol', as 'Ibyeol' .

This is because some dialects of Kyomal, most notably in the deep south where Rhee hails from in his hometown of Bulgoeul, frequently entirely "drop" the initial (like from 'Ribyeol', to 'Ibyeol') or otherwise soften the "R" sound to an "N" (like from 'Ragweon' to 'Nagweon'). In fact, the CSBL says that Rhee mispronounces even his own name! - always opting to call himself "Ee" (이) instead of "Rhee" (리), as his surname (李) is properly pronounced.

Many on social media took to popular sites like Kofitalk to protest the 'ludicrous' intervention of the CSBL, which is increasingly seen as a nuisance due to its' constant efforts to petition anyone from professors to newscasters to actors to musicians to even idols in efforts to get them to speak "Proper" Baegukese. One citizen from Yidaburi, a small deep southern mining town located close to the Mioksan Mountains, expressed her thoughts to The NamDo as such:

Quote:One thing the CSBL doesn't understand is that we citizens like unorthodox accents. Satoori [regional dialects] is fun to listen to and I think it really says a lot about our culture more than if we all spoke in the same voice.

In general, while use of Standard Baegukese is widely favored in the cities, rural communities have found the government's enforcement of official state grammar to be sometimes overbearing and intrusive. As regional communities continue to use thair own dialects, one wonders how effective the CSBL's pleas will be. KRAY himself has not publicly responded on the matter, and did not comment on it to The NamDo.

Amid Increasingly Optimistic Growth, Sinsidae Breaks Ground on 'Gaedal' Building

5566.1.20. - Gongmangdo - Sinsidae Corporation has announced the construction of a new financial and commercial building to trump all others in Gongmangdo Capital City. The national economy, which reported an estimated 4.3% growth in GDP last year, finally appears to confirm the end of economic stagnation. As a result and with housing and commercial space increasingly more rare in the heart of Gongmangdo, Sinsidae has promised to develop a plot of land in the city's Kiryu-gu district into a massive 123-floor skyscraper.

The early 56th century saw the effects of increased reliance on WDU partners and the laissez-faire trade result in a semi-deindustrialization of much of Baeguk - especially Myeoggi and to a lesser extent Rokgi province - with moves towards service jobs and emphasis being drawn away from metallurgy and textiles to the chemical and technology industries. However, trade policy reform has led to the encouragement of domestic production, and coupled with both tax code reform and subsidy and investment initiatives as well as powerful innovations in mineral and metal extraction technology and material synthesizing Baegukese industry has begun to pick up steam in recent years. After the net negative contractions in growth of the 5540s, these offsets were minimized in the 5550s and now appear to have been reversed into positive economic growth in the 5560s. Last year reported 4.3% growth, the greatest of the decade yet after 5564's 2.3%, 5563's 2.5%, 5562's 3.2%, 5561's 2.1%, and 5560's 3.7%.

Riding off of this wave, however, is increased crowding in the capital of Gongmangdo, whose immediate area continues to constitute a rough eighth of the entire national population. Sinsidae, historically one of the urban great developers of the region, has thus capitalized on this spike to invest in an iconic structure meant to ease congestion in the southeast of the city and serve as a venue for the new economic ventures taking place in the metropolis. The Gaedal building, named for the ancient appellation of Baeguk as the People of Gaedal, or the Great North (加達民族), will reach the height of 555 m (1,821 ft) and contain approximately 304,081 m2 (3,273,100 sq ft) in floor area. It is projected to top out around 5572 and to be open for business by 5574.

'Tiger Cub Diplomacy' as Xsampa Invests into KGB Microchips

5566.7.12. - Gongmangdo - Following the conclusion of a summit in the Xsampan capital of Metz-Leonid, the Xsampan Democratic Republic (XDR), a long-respected partner of the Kingdom of Great Baeguk (KGB), today announced that the XDR People's Committee of Foreign Affairs would award a foreign investment fund to the Microchip contractor Hanulro Group, mediated by the Baegukese government. The deal will see the fund granted to Hanulro in return for mandatory minimum shipments of the finished products to Xsampa.

During the summit, General Secretary of the Xsampan Communist Party, Wangchen, met with Baeguk's own Prime Minister Yiri Dalbodeurae to hash out the details of increased economic cooperation. Baegukese soft power has proven a powerful influence in that nation, as the once-strict state censors permitted the broadcast and even filming of selective Baegukese K-Dramas whilst Baegukese beauty companies continue to export massive amounts of cosmetics and skincare products. Besides this, Baeguk and Xsampa trade raw materials, rare earth, minerals, machine parts, chemicals, and produce with each other. Xsampa's rise as a developing economic producer has also created strong need for Baeguk's coveted machinery and synthesized chemicals, whilst Baeguk in turn is increasingly reliant on Xsampan manufactured goods. As economic ties continue to grow, Xsampan stakes in Baeguk's microchip production capabilities will likely play a key role in promoting the technological development of both nations as Terra continues to digitize.

The summit saw the emergence of what some have called 'Tiger Cub Diplomacy'. It appears to be a response to the Xsampan wedding gift of Dhondup the Yak - whose name means 'good fortune' and 'prosperity' - to the newly married Imperial Couple years ago in 5547. Now, using the rare Dovanian Tiger - Baeguk's national animal, only present on the Dan Peninsula and the western section of the Great Dovanian Plain - Baeguk is reciprocating this generosity. The government announced after the conclusion of talks that it would transfer two Baegukese Dovanian Tiger cubs to the Xsampan delegation as a goodwill gift.

His Imperial Majesty the Hwamu Emperor Himself presented the tiger cubs Woori (우리, female, 9 weeks old) and Daegan (大干, male, 7 weeks old) to General Secretary Wangchen. As for Dhondup, he is now 19 years old. He continues to reside on the Jesu Palace grounds, but often tours at a special exhibit at Gongmangdo's Seoul Mahdang Zoo, and continues to be kept after by the Imperial Family. Crown Prince Dohoon, who has pursued education upon his return from the military last year, also posted a selfie featuring himself and Dhondup on the social media site Kofitalk during the time of the summit, exciting many on the status update.

Nonetheless, even though the mood was good between the two governments, many Baegukese are concerned about the intimate nature of interstate relations. Human Rights Groups criticized the move, claiming that Xsampan investment was 'dirty money' and that closer ties will mean ignoring the poor humanitarian situation and lack of civil rights in Xsampa. Xsampa remains a Metzist-Leonidist nation that does not allow non-communist parties to participate in its' political system, with authoritarian tendencies to suppress free speech and opposition. Many question how Baeguk, a nation with liberal democratic values and human rights enshrined in its constitution, could possibly see fit to continue to accept increasing entanglement with Xsampa, an authoritarian communist party-state. PM Yiri Dalbodeurae did not respond to The Gongmangdo Times' efforts to ask for her comment.

Gaedal Tower Opens, Becomes Tallest Building in KGB

5574.3.10. - Gongmangdo - The Gaedal Tower was declared open to the public today in a massive ceremony attended by both the Mayor of Gongmangdo and His Imperial Highness, the Hwamu Emperor. The Gaedal Tower, a symbol of the population expansion nearing the nation to almost 50 million souls strong, has been under continuous construction for 8 years since 5566 under the Sinsidae Corporation. At 123 stories tall it has broken the national record previously held by another Gongmangdo skyscraper, the West Dovani Trade Tower, to become the tallest building in the Kingdom of Great Baeguk.

"Kimchi" Slur Draws Outrage, Condemnation from Public
Ethnic Panmuan and New Vernham-born wrestler Khatanzorig (ハタンゾリグ, Panmuan: Хатанзориг) sparked outrage at a West Dovanian Fighting Syndicate (WDFS) match yesterday by throwing an ethnic slur at his opponent, Baegukese wrestler Yiri Haeoreum (伊梨해오름). During the boxing match in Ishinawa, Seko, Khatanzorig was caught on camera yelling at Yiri, insulting him as a "Kimchi Bastard" in Kunikata (キムチ野郎, Kimuchi Yaro). Demeaning ethnic slurs involving Kimchi are prominent throughout Dovani and serve to stigmatize Kyo people and their food, which is why many in Baeguk consider similar remarks highly offensive. Although Yiri went on to win the fight, many remained angry at the fact that the remarks did not penalize Khatanzorig during the match. Some MMA fans online have gone so far as to call for a general boycott of New Verhamese goods if Khatanzorig does not apologize, even if the amount of trade between New Verham and Baeguk is minimal. The KGB government has not yet reacted to the event. The Embassy of New Vernham did not respond to the Gongmangdo Times' request for comment.

Crown Princess Announced
It has been revealed that Her Grace Princess Baek Sohyeon (18) is the new Heir Apparent to the Hibiscus Throne. His Grace Prince Baek Dohoon (29) has decided to forfeit succession and has removed himself from the Imperial line of rule. It should be noted that, as the succession law was reformed in 5500, the sex of the child no longer matters and female succession is completely legal.
