Tsargrad - After months of anticipation, the general election of late 5693 has come to a close, resulting in Lazarescu's SSD remaining the largest party in the new Imperial Assembly. This was the first election under the new constitutional ammendments passed last year with 150 more seats to be divided in this election then the election of 5690. The result was a relieve for the SSD, which had been declining in the polls for months and saw the KDU closing in. The outcome was rosier then expected, as the SSD won nearly 3% of the vote more then was anticipated in pre-election polls. Even with this result however, the party has not managed to win a majority like in the previous election, instead ending up with 190 seats (40 short of a majority). The KDU managed to win 131 seats, a clear increase for the party but still a somewhat dissapointing result. 

Savez! won 59 seats, with the RKP being the largest suprise this election as the communists won 34 seats, a all time high for the newest party in the Assembly. Lazarescu, who hinted at a potential coalition with the RKP before the election, will now be forced to look towards Savez! or the KDU to form a coalition government. The Social Liberals have ruled out any coalition with the RKP, and Savez! has indicated that the SSD would have to "step away from its socialist policies" if they were to enter a coalition. Mirko Vozetić, political correspondent for Deltarac, sees rough negotiations ahead.

All oppossition parties smell blood. After nearly 8 years of Lazarescu, all see the loss of his majority as a chance to change course. The KDU has already appointed a negotiating team consisting of party hardliners and firm Hosian Democrats, indicating that the party seeks to harvest big in any negotiation. Meanwhile Lazarescu himself is keeping all the options on the table, but all familiar with the situation behind the scenes seem to agree that his only real option for a coalition is the KDU. His weakened position following this loss means that whatever coalition comes out of these negotiations, it is clear that the SSD will have to give up on some of its policies

If a SSD-KDU grand coalition is to be formed, it would be the first time ever that the two main parties in the country form a government together.
