SUBJECT: Statement on Legal Proceedings Involving a New Englian Citizen in the Nadiyan Confederation

BRIDGEMONT — The Confederate Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirms that it is closely monitoring developments in the case of The People v. MacGiolla, currently before the Supreme Cooperative Court of the Nadiyan Confederation.

Ms Penelope MacGiolla, a citizen of the Confederation of New Englia, is facing capital charges following the exhaustion of all available appeals in the lower courts. The Ministry is aware that the prosecution has sought the imposition of the death penalty, with life imprisonment without parole advanced as an alternative request.

The Government of the Confederation of New Englia reiterates its longstanding and unequivocal opposition to the use of capital punishment in all circumstances. While fully respecting the sovereignty, constitutional order, and judicial independence of the Nadiyan Confederation, New Englia maintains that the death penalty constitutes a cruel and irreversible sanction that is incompatible with contemporary human rights standards.

At the direction of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, the New Englian Ambassador to Nadiya has made urgent representations to the victim, the relevant federal authorities and to the prosecutorial service. These representations formally request that the death penalty be removed from consideration, irrespective of the final judicial outcome. The Ministry emphasises that this request is made in the spirit of long-standing bilateral cooperation and mutual respect.

The Ministry is acutely conscious of the profound tragedy underlying this case. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the child who lost their life, and to the family of Ms Éabha Callaghan, a New Englian citizen who was also killed. Ms Callaghan was employed by the Donoteovsky family at the time of her death. The Consular Assistance Unit of the Ministry is providing ongoing support to the families of both the accused and the deceased during this deeply distressing period.

Both Ms MacGiolla and Ms Callaghan were participants in the Immigration Workers Program, jointly administered by the Nadiyan Commission for Refugees, Migrants & Asylum Seekers and the Government of New Englia. This programme has long served as a safe, legal, and regulated pathway for New Englian citizens to live and work in the Nadiyan Confederation, reducing reliance on irregular migration routes and contributing materially to household incomes and foreign-currency inflows to New Englia.

The Government remains committed to the continuation of lawful labour mobility arrangements between our nations. At the same time, we stress the necessity of ensuring that New Englian citizens participating in such programmes are afforded due process, legal clarity, and protection consistent with international norms. The Ministry urges restraint in public commentary while judicial proceedings are ongoing, noting that all accused persons are entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

The Ministry expresses confidence that the Supreme Cooperative Court will conduct a thorough, fair, and transparent review in accordance with Nadiyan law. New Englia will continue to provide Ms MacGiolla with all appropriate consular assistance and access to legal support as the case proceeds.
The Ministry will issue further updates as warranted by developments in the case.
