63 Killed in Pre-Dawn Assault on Ban Tha Chan as UPM Escalates Campaign in Suman

Udon Nakhon — A coordinated pre-dawn massacre by fighters from the Unified People's Militia (UPM) has left at least 63 unarmed civilians dead and more than 140 injured in the mountain village of Ban Tha Chan, marking one of the deadliest single incidents in Suman Province since the 5640 Rocket Festival attack in Na Sap.

According to local and military sources, the attack began in the early morining of 16 January when, under the cover of a mortar barrage, UPM forces advanced from the tree line, attacking the village, setting fire to houses and killing civilians either by shooting or hurling grenades or incendiary devices into homes and shelters as families attempted to flee or hide. Entire rows of wooden stilt houses were set ablaze. Survivors described scenes of chaos as villagers ran toward the local temple compound for safety, only to be met by further gunfire. Local hospital authorities have also confirmed that many of the dead were killed at close range, including in execution style shootings.

Ban Tha Chan sits just north of a key smuggling corridor running toward the Yerrawa and Medina borders, an area long contested by the UPM, triad affiliates, and local criminal enterprises. The village had been under the protection of the South Dovani Army and, more controversially, had seen an increased presence of ethnic-Hanzai National Defence Corps (NDC) militiamen in recent months.

The massacre has left 63 unarmed civilians dead and injured 140+ others. The Army reported three casualties and 13 injuries, and claimed to have killed four attackers. The NDC has not yet publicly released casualty figures, though local sources suggest that at least five NDC militiamen were killed.

The exceptionally high civilian death toll in Ban Tha Chan, despite its nominal protection by the Army and NDC auxiliaries, has yet to be officially explained by the military. Observers and critics of the military's counter-insurgency strategy argue that the death toll reflects the structural and tactical failures caused by the fragmentation of authority between Army and NDC militiamen, as well as poor defensive posturing oriented towards roadside checkpoints, leaving other approaches to the village exposed. Security analysts also note that the scale and coordination of the assault reflects the tactical evolution the UPM first demonstrated during its 5641 bombing and ambush campaign across eastern South Dovani.

Later in the day, the UPM issued a video statement that was circulated widely on social media platforms before being removed by the platforms following a government order. The video featured the masked UPM commander known by his nom de guerre Insee Lek (“Iron Eagle”), defending the operation as retaliation for what he described as “military and fascist paramilitary operations targeting the peasants, who we serve.” The statement made no direct acknowledgment of civilian casualties.

“Ban Tha Chan was a fortified nest of reactionary, fascist forces,” Insee Lek declared. “Our assault on these enemies of the people are but one spark of the ongoing wildfire which is the people’s revolutionary struggle against the fascist regime in Udon Nakhon.”

Government officials swiftly condemned the remarks. Eastern Operations Commander General Dechathon Phuwanat described the attack as “a calculated act of terror against unarmed villagers,” adding that the UPM was “attempting to cloak ethnic slaughter in revolutionary rhetoric.”

"The UPM has long sought to divide the Sai people, describing the Mountain Sai [Sumanese] as 'reactionary' and 'backwards,'" said General Dechathon. "They are trying to shatter the unity of Hansan and her peoples, for it is the only way to satisfy their bloodlust."

Protests and riots have erupted across the Suman Province, with Sumanese citizens expressing their outrage at the atrocity and the inability of the military to protect their communities despite a heavy and sustained presence in the region since at least 5636. For many Sumanese, the Ban Tha Chan massacre evokes painful memories of the 5640 Rocket Festival attack in Na Sap, when 31 people, including much of the Sumanese Liberation Front (SLF) leadership, were gunned down during the annual merit-making rocket festival.

A growing belief in the Suman province is that the national government is allowing a certain degree of violence to be perpetrated against the Sumanese in order to justify the military operation in the East. Speaking at a rally near Taeng Daeng, one SLF organizer alleged that the government had “advanced knowledge” of both the Na Sap and Ban Tha Chan massacres, claiming authorities allowed violence to proceed in order to weaken the SLF and justify an expanded military occupation of the East.

This claim is vociferously disputed by government and military officials. General Dechathon characterized the SLF organizer's allegations as "conspiratorial at best, seditious at worst." Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Office released a statement, expressing their horror and sorrow at the "massacre of innocent Suman people," and pledged to "bring justice to the victims and their families through redoubling our efforts to fight UPM terror."

Beyond Suman, demonstrations in response to the massacre have spread across South Dovani in villages and cities alike, as citizens express their shock at the senseless killing, and their anger with the government for failing to stabilize the security situation in the Eastern provinces. Justice Party (JP) leader Kawin Kittisakchai, while speaking at a vigil in the city of Rattanakhon, that "the government's approach has utterly failed."

"Over three decades of a 'special security operation' in the East, the only outcome of which has been the demonstration of our government's inability to bring peace and security to the region," said Kawin. "It is time for a new approach, grounded in a respect for diplomacy, human rights, and human dignity for all across Hansan."

The left-leaning opposition, of which Kawin's JP is the leading party, has long called for a negotiated settlement to hostilities in the East. This has been derided by the conservative government of Prime Minister Prasert Thanomchai as naïve, arguing that any negotiations with armed insurgents amount to “rewarding terror with concessions.” Yet analysts suggest the Ban Tha Chan massacre may mark a turning point. With the UPM escalating, the SLF weakened but resentful, and nationalist militias entrenched in Suman districts, the risk of spiralling inter-communal violence is growing.
