South Dovani facing worst drought in nearly 200 years

South Dovani is in the grip of the worst drought for more than 200 years as water levels in the nation's dams have fallen by nearly 20 percent, while the Buataya River has fallen below its critical threshold for the second consecutive month, leaving the Republic’s agricultural heartlands in a state of slow-motion collapse. The emerald rice paddies of the central plains have turned into a jigsaw puzzle of cracked, grey clay. The young stalks, which should soon be heavy with grain, have been reduced to parched yellow husks which rattle like dry bones in the hot, dry wind.

Given that the Buataya river supports over half of South Dovani's population and nearly two-thirds of its GDP, the consequences of the impending drought have caused significant anxiety and concern across the country. Satellite and aerial imagery show the river’s braided course unravelling in parts to thin threads of brown water, cutting through now-exposed mudflats. Ferries and cargo barges that normally connect rural communities with the broader national logistics network have been forced to suspend operations, contributing to supply shortages and labour issues. Meanwhile, grounded fishing boats now sit tilted on cracked riverbanks, their nets tangled with dried brush that blows across the dusty expanses of exposed river sediment.

In the coastal city of Khattaya, at the mouth of the Buataya, the crisis is manifesting in the very taste of the city. With the river’s flow too weak to repel the tide from the southern gulf, a salt wedge has pushed fifty kilometres inland. Municipal authorities have reported that salinity levels at several intake stations along the river have climbed to nearly triple the safety threshold for drinking water. Residents had reported a distinct briny tang in their tap water, leading the Ministry of Health to issue a boil water advisory for multiple districts in the city. More recently, the National People's Army (NPA) has mobilized across Khattaya to distribute bottled water in affected districts. In Udon Nakhon, residents have been shocked by the amount of trash, debris, and other pollution exposed at the bottom of the capital's khlongs (canals), emerging as their water level declines.

Meanwhile, the timing could not be worse for the central agricultural heartland, given that March is a critical period for the second rice crop, a venture that relies entirely on pumped irrigation from canals and tributaries. Without sustained flows from upstream dams and other reservoirs, many pumping stations now draw only upon shallow pools of stagnant water. Agricultural cooperatives and industry analysts estimate that as much as 40 percent of the second crop could fail if rainfall does not arrive by early April. In the absence of a functional National Assembly to approve emergency subsidies, reports of farmers engaged in water poaching have emerged, at times leading to violent skirmishes at the gates of state-run sluices.

The UNX Composite Index for agricultural exports has plummeted as, for the first time in living memory, businesses and political leaders have begun discussing the possibility of importing grain from abroad. The idea remains politically sensitive, as South Dovani has styled itself as the region’s agricultural powerhouse since antiquity, a status which carries both economic and symbolic weight.

The impacts are not limited to agriculture. Hydropower, which represents a modest yet stabilizing component of the overall national energy grid composition, has declined sharply as reservoirs fall. At the same time, traditional thermal power plants that rely on river water for cooling are struggling with reduced intake levels in tandem with increased demand, given the above-average temperatures of recent weeks. Rolling blackouts and brownouts have impacted cities across the country, particularly in Rattanakosin, which relies heavily on energy produced by the Lourenne-Hansan Friendship Dam.

In rural Khoratya province, near the Wat Chai Mongkhon along the Buataya, the receding current revealed the ancient, bleached stones of a 14th-century royal fortress that had been submerged for over four thousand years. Local residents have begun holding vigils at the exposed stones, claiming the river's retreat is a physical manifestation of the nation’s spiritual deficit, describing the stones as Terra "bearing her bones."
