Federal laws changed: More room for local governments

National-led Government works together with Reform opposition to pass curcial laws

Randworth - Long have all parties within the Federal Parliament talked about reforming the nation, but never has one delivered in the last thirty years. Mordusia is a largely rural nation with various differing provinces that are vastly different from one another. Now, with the help of a common initiative by the Nationals and Reform a bill passed the House that will give more room for local governments to create policy, get more responsibility in carrying out federal policy and even more crucially: the funding for local governments have been increased drasticly. 

the Prime-Minister, Mr. DeWitt, who has announced that this will be his last term in office and that after this term he will try to enjoy his retirement, stated that it was the biggest mistake of his administration to ''fall behind on our promise to give more space for local governments''. With this new bill the government hopes together with the Reform opposition that local governments will be able to carry out more functions, create better policies on issues that affect the people more directly. The Minister of the Interior, Vivian Champ, has stated that she believes that with the current bill passing into law will ''bring about the promise we made''. Though Reform has been skeptical of the government and finds that the Nationals took too long to bring about the promised change, has stated that it is ''a step in the right direction''. 

The reform bill gives more funding to local governments, does away with politically loyalty demands of civil servants and allows local governments to create policy on their own as long as it does not violate Federal Laws. The Federal Government has further announced that along the guidelines of these laws they wish to create cocreation policies in regards to welfare and healthcare. Allowing local differences in some while guarenteeing a federal standard. The first decentralised power that was increased was the police. Vivian Champ said that with the new change the local police do no longer fall under the Federal police and that they will be overseen by the governor of the specific province. 

Though the bill focuses mostly on the increase in powers to the provincial governments, the bill also included a huge change for cities. From now on mayors will be elected and lead the government of a city instead of a councill. This weird leftist collectivist remainder, as Vivian Champ said, had to be removed in favour of a figure who can play an important role in the governance of cities and towns.
