5605 ELECTIONS: LOSS FOR EVERYONE OR RIGHT-WING TRIUMPH?

Following a period of six months characterised by dedication and efforts to engage with the electorate, the results of the 5605 elections have now been declared.Contrary to the predictions made by pre-election polls, the loss experienced by the liberals was more significant than anticipated, with Parti de l'Union libérale égalitaire (Luth.: Liberal Egalitarian Union Party) seeing a decrease of 23% compared to the previous elections, and ultimately securing 36 seats, down from the previous 80. Despite this shift, the right-wing bloc did not secure a majority, with a total of 74 seats out of the 90 required.The final composition of the Assembly is as follows:

Parti Socialiste (Luth.: Socialist Party) - 29 seats

Parti de l'Union libérale égalitaire (Luth.: Liberal Egalitarian Union Party) - 36 seats

Parti du Centre (Luth.: Centre Party) - 41 seats

Parti Nationaliste (Luth.: Nationalist Party) - 40 seats

Parti de l'indépendance nationale (Luth.: National Independence Party) - 34 seats

Meanwhile, the Governor-General has adopted a more conventional approach, with Jean-Luc Lajoie of the PN defeating PC candidate Napoléon Batteux in the second round, gaining 56% of the vote.As the Governor-General has the right to appoint their cabinet without outside influence, the PN and the PIN have announced that they will be forming a minority government, apparently depending on the right faction of the PC to pass legislation and resist a potential vote of no confidence.

Only time will tell how long this arrangement can survive, but the atmosphere at PN and PIN headquarters appears to be one of optimism.
