Government declares complete military victory in civil war

President Kembo Umoja has issued a statement declaring “complete military victory” over the Ntoto National Progress Coalition (NNPC). For almost seventy years, the country has been devastated by a related series of conflicts between government forces and a collection of rebel groups. According to the president’s statement this afternoon, this long period of conflict is over after the government captured the northern city of Dekoto.

Civil war has ravaged Ntoto for generations. Since he was originally elected to the presidency in 5584, Umoja has made eliminating rebel forces the primary objective of the national government. In spite of setbacks over the past two decades, he has achieved this principal aim. Whether this provides a period of relative stability remains to be seen but the significance of the achievement should not be understated.

Domestic and international analysts are divided on the future prospects for the country. The conclusion of the civil war does not mean an end to violence. Even as the government has closed in on the last remaining areas of NNPC control, there have been isolated attacks by rebel groups across the country. Last month, at least 13 people were killed in a car bombing in the capital. The ethno-nationalist Hounwe Protection Group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Umoja pledged that the defeat of rebel forces is the “beginning of a new future for the people of Ntoto”. Beginning in his first presidential term, domestic and international observers have criticised the targeting political opposition figures by the police. Umoja has retained a stable level of popularity with the public primarily due to his success in restoring government control though. Now that the conflict appears to be over, Umoja will have to reckon with a fresh set of political challenges.
