The National Congress applauding the approvation of the new law
July 5628
ROMULA - The National Congress yesterday has officially approved the government-initiated law that reintroduces the crime of "Apology of Quanzar", considering it a symbol of oppression and suffering for the Istalian people. The new legislation, which revived a similar law introduced under the Third Empire, provides that any reference, adoption or mention of the term in an apologetic or propagandistic sense is considered inappropriate and disrespectful towards the national historical memory.
The government's decision arises from the need to reaffirm Istalian identity and remember the atrocities committed by the regimes that have used the name "Quanzar". Historically this term is linked to a series of attempts at cultural erasure, persecution and authoritarian impositions that have affected the Istalian people for centuries.
The term "Quanzar" is associated with events such as:
The occupation of the Istalian lands by the Empire of the Grand Emirate of Quanzar, which attempted to impose the Majatran culture and eradicate the Istalian one also criminalizing the official use of the Istalian language.
The dominion of the Emirate of Quanzar, a remnant of the previous Grand Emirate that retreated into the Sarrentine Peninsula, which in 1958 conquered the first Istalian nation, the Kingdom of Istalia in Alaria, and which continued the work of eradication begun by its predecessor.
The period of the "Union of Quanzari Soviets", which continued to be dominated by the Majatran element despite the propagandized overcoming of ethno-linguistic divisions.
The imposition of the authoritarian monarchical regimes of the House of Hessex, which three times suppressed the Istalian Republic and its democratic system, resuming the work of eradicating the Istalian culture and language this time in favor of a general Luthorianization of the country.
More recently, the failed experiences of the Union of Quanzar and Alaria and the Istalian Union of Quanzar and Alaria, two attempts to undermine the political and cultural unity of the country.
Finally, the Grand Emirate of Quanzar "restored" under the aegis of the Majalite Kingdom of Kafuristan in the aftermath of the Peninsula War and overthrown at the end of the Patriotic War of Liberation a few years ago.
All these events have profoundly affected the history of the country, with persecutions, deportations and even the prohibition of the use of the Istalian language in some eras. Everybody remember, for example, the prison camps where the istalians opposing the Hessexian regime where imprisoned and brutally used to build the infamous Solentian Wall, a subject of one of the most successful and appreciated film of Istalian filmography, "Il Muro" (The Wall in luthorian).
The law just approved establishes that the term Quanzar cannot be used with apologetic and propagandistic intent in official documents, textbooks, etc... and any use of the term in this sense or symbols associated with it in the public sphere will be severely sanctioned.
A review of educational materials will be promoted to eliminate any positive reference to "Quanzar".
The holiday of the Dissolution of the Quanzari Restorationists, which has been celebrated every 22 September since 3364, and traditionally sees the Head of Government give a speech in parliament to present considerations on the actions undertaken by the Government during the final year and to talk about future projects, will be fully restored and expanded in its intent to celebrate the resilience and victories of the country against the Quanzar threat in all its forms and will include much more important and elaborate celebrations and events, becoming an annual occasion to remember the horrors and suffering but also to celebrate the firm will and resilience of the Istalians in resisting the threats of eradication of their identity. Together the 2 May, "La Festa degli Istaliani" (Istalians' Day in Luthorian), the national holiday celebrated each year since 2263 to commemorate the establishment of the first modern nationally and ethnically Istalian nation encompassing the whole Peninsula and Island freed from foreign domination, both the national holiday will become furthermore occasions to celebrate the Istalian heritage.
According to the government, this measure is essential to preserve the memory of the victims of oppressive regimes and to ensure that future generations know the historical truth and it seems to be a quite shared opinion given that the approval of the law saw virtually all of Parliament vote in favor of the proposal, with just the exception of some members of the New Communists and Sovereign Istalia who instead expressed their doubts about the law, echoing some civil rights activists and some history experts, arguing that the absolute ban could limit freedom of expression and historical research. However, the government defends the decision, stating that the term Quanzar is comparable to symbols of totalitarian ideologies and should have no place in modern Istalian society.
With this law, therefore, Istalia takes a decisive step towards protecting its cultural identity and historical memory. It remains to be seen how this legislation will be applied in practice and what impact it will have on society and the teaching of history in the country.
