Election Night 5631: NEWP-PIE Gov't Loses Mandate
Deluge of New Parties Sees Old Order Overturned
12 November 5631 (OOC: Backdated)

If the voters of South Dovani have sent any message with their collective voice in the November 5631 legislative election, it is one of conflicting visions for the future of one of Dovani's youngest democracies.

Official results from polling stations across the country have confirmed suspicions by analysts in the runup to the election, with the flood of parties formed in the wake of Kob Suchinda's historic victory in the presidential election last year.

Perhaps most startling of all developments was the collapse in support for the NEWP (from 170 seats to 95, a 56% seat drop, their worst showing since 5616) and for the PIE (97 to 54, down 56%). The incumbent governing coalition, which in 5625 was granted a 267 seat mandate, now holds only 149 seats and appears to have little to no path to maintaining its hold on the administration.

The other historic foundational parties of South Dovanian politics fared no better, however. The revolutionary groups which last held power under Prime Minister Duangnet Bunnag before the 5616 election have continued their precipitous decline. The RA (53 -> 25, down 47%) has become an afterthought in South Dovanian politics, a vestige of a bygone era. The PPU (65 -> 22, down 34%), which had previously retained significant power as a broad tent left wing alliance saw its support split among the several new left wing factions.

With seemingly no path for NEWP-PIE and Revolutionary governments of the past to find coalition, an expanded coalition led by the PA could be possible

Little is clear on what the governing coalition will be, if one can be formed at all. President Kob was quick to announce following the returns that he would give the right of first refusal to leadership from the Patriotic Alliance, an electoral coalition of the United Conservative Front and the Hanzen Heritage Party which backed his independent campaign for the presidency and which has performed well since its announcement.

The PA achieved a plurality in the election, 136 seats (UCF 74, HHP 62) but itself has no clear path to majority. Some analysts believe the PA may look to work with parties across the spectrum including an ascendant NDP (15 seats as the FfSD last election, now 29), the minority-interest United Communities Party (19), the Homeland Party (18), and the liberal Civic Alliance (12).

Even such a broad coalition would hold only 43% of the National Assembly, however, leading many to suggest that the only real path to a majority may be for the expanded PA coalition to enlist the PIE, a prospect perhaps unthinkable only a year ago when the NEWP-PIE alliance seemed strong. Should such a coalition be made workable (and many doubt it could be), the government would hold a narrow seat majority (268 seats in total) in the National Assembly. PIE spokespeople, for their part, have said that anything must be considered in South Dovani's political landscape.
