Government to build 75,000 social housing units in 5 years, premier Jalar announces

Bianjian cabinet will join efforts with the local governments and build up to 75,000 new housing units across the nation in the next five years, said in the joint briefing Premier Jalar. Kibōjūtaku, translated to Luthorian as the Hope Housing, one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in recent history was unveiled yesterday morning by the Premier, finance minister Makata Hegiya and the infrastructure minister Huang Zou.

According to the profile minister Zou, the large-scale construction project will target both rural and urban areas, aiming to decrease the housing shortage and reduce the burden of prices for lower and working class families through the social housing programs allocating the newly built homes to those in need. "This is a big step in ensuring that thousands of our families, lower and working class, can live a dignified, secured life with opportunities across the board", premier Jalar said. "Homes like these are and will not be just a roof above people's heads–it's also the foundation of the stability. We're building not just homes, but also people's hopes for a better future in Bianjie, hence the name [chuckles]."

Finance minister Hegiya told reporters that this project will be financed from a couple of sources, with the main ones being: state budget, in particular infrastructure ministry funding; private companies, like the Ambagašan-based Credev, according to the Shōgyōshi sources; and announced for the first time publicly, Xsampa, through an agreement with the Xsampan goverment, that has pledged financial and technical assistance to this project. Hegiya in her final remarks called the project "an investment with long-term returns", and confirmed that the planning and site selection was already underway, with the government expecting the construction to begin by the September of this year.

But, not everyone was as positive about this as the government is. With local elections being a couple of months away, the opposition feels like this announcement serves as a "non-direct attempt to buy voters through cheap populism", BDA statement reads. Leader of the Opposition Tabai Wenggot told in Radio Dokuritsu's morning show that the BDA is "not against housing", but rather what they feel like this project is doing is "trying to distract people from the fact that Bianjie is falling into an autocratic and corrupt wormhole under the SPP".

Meanwhile, Gurun and its leader, Babutai Dartao, former deputy premier and health minister, was rather cautious in his remarks towards the plan, trying to attack the cabinet for not being transparent enough: "Look, we all know and understand that housing is a moral right and necessity, but just saying stuff is not enough, government must assure that people know what their money is being spent on, and be sure that the corporations are not gonna suck off the taxpayer funding, that is a project by the people for the people". PFP has signaled similar discontent with the project, asking for an independent oversight commission to "ensure public, private and foreign funds are used effectively and fairly".

However, one the question also raised by some journalists and commentators is: what will happen to the project, if the current government will not be re-elected in 5638? Premier Jalar responded: "It will be up to the next government, but currently, and for the next 3 years we will be focused on making this happen as much as we can."
