Chairman Resigns Following Anti-Ahmadi Controversy

Chairman of the Council of Ministers Ousman Ngum has announced that he is resigning as leader of the Mwisintoto People's Party with immediate effect. Ngum, who has led the MPP for nearly a quarter of a century, said that he could "no longer command the complete respect and loyalty of [his] legislators" but confirmed that he would continue as head of state until an internal election had been held to determine his successor. In the meantime, his former deputy leader Jon Ndiaye has taken acting leadership of the People's Party.
While Ngum may give pressure from his own party as his reason for resignation, most would agree that- in reality- it is the Ahmadi Justice Party that have forced him to step down from his long-standing position. Last week, Ngum faced severe criticism for numerous offensive remarks made about the nation's substantial Ahmadi minority in a previously un-broadcasted interview from a decade ago. In the footage, he refers to then-AJP leader Naseeba Marenah as a "dingo-brained moron" and to traditional Ahmadi customs as "voodoo nonsense" and faced immediate calls to resign when it was leaked. Yesterday, the party's leader in the Senate launched an official motion of no confidence in the Chairman and several MMP Senators warned they may have to support the motion if it reached a vote.
Ultimately, the political ramifications of the scandal could be much further-reaching. Any potential successor to Ngum will need to command the support of the diverse People's Party members of the State Assembly, which the outgoing leader was able to achieve in part due to the varied nature of his leadership team. On top of that, the lack of an MPP-majority in the Senate means that Ngum's replacement will need the votes of at least one other political party and this is unlikely to be the AJP given the recent storm. Negotiating a deal which ensures that the Council of Ministers is able to succeed in passing its legislative agenda could take weeks or even months.
Even in the short hours since the announcement was made, several contenders have emerged in the leadership race. Foremost among them are leader of the MPP's Hosian Caucus Oumil Sarr, who would attempt to appeal to the party's traditional opposition, the Hosian Democrats, with a economic liberalisation programme. Her closest rival is the State Assembly Chief Whip Momodou Jawara, a nationalist firebrand and close associate of Chairman Ngum, who has worked extensively alongside the National Front in the past. Both have controversies and will need to do begin work immediately if they are to win over their colleagues.
