Ntotoan Parliament suspended by President Ariel Umoja
3 January 5615

President Ariel Umoja has suspended parliament in response to “political instability caused by opposition politicians”. In a public address earlier today, President Umoja claimed members of parliament were deliberately obstructing his legislative agenda, and jeopardising the functioning of the Ntotoan government. For an initial period of three months, Umoja has personally assumed all parliamentary powers.

The suspension follows months of tension between Umoja and opposition lawmakers. Last year’s general election delivered a divided government. Umoja won a comfortable re-election in the presidential vote but the opposition New Popular Alternative won a plurality in the Ntotoan Parliament.

Earlier this week, the legislature voted down Umoja’s latest budget proposal. Since his ascension to the presidency, he has been dogged by corruption allegations. New Popular Alternative parliamentary leader Liel George pledged that his party would not approve the spending bill unless the president introduced fresh legislation to tackle the problem. Umoja had earlier threatened “decisive action” if the “unconstitutional obstructionism” did not end.

Following the suspension, human rights groups have reiterated long-standing concerns about democratic backsliding in Ntoto over the 50 years. Despite the opposition’s success in the last parliamentary election, the vote was marked by widespread reports of voter intimidation. In the presidential election, Umoja’s principal rival was disqualified by the Supreme Court.

In the short time since the president’s announcement, demonstrators have gathered in the capital to demonstrate their opposition to the decision. Hundreds of people have gathered waving the national flag and chanting anti-corruption slogans. A small contingent of counter-protestors have gathered too. No violence has been reported yet but there is a significant police presence.
