Historic agreement with Vanuku: Carvelli to be extradited to Istalia

Istalia has offered its financial and technical support for the modernization of the Grand Canal of Vanuku and the news is already having a positive effect on the markets affected by the Migrant Pass crisis

ROMULA – In an announcement that has shaken the Istalian political scene and is set to provoke reactions throughout Majatra, the Government has announced that it has reached an unprecedented agreement with the government of Vanuku, putting an end to a decade-long diplomatic conundrum: the location and extradition of Publio Carvelli, the last leader of the defunct Socialist Republic of Istalia who fled at the end of the Civil War in Alaria.

According to what was officially communicated by the Minister Secretary of State Saragat, after years of investigations and Intelligence operations, the Istalian authorities have confirmed the presence of Carvelli in Vanuku territory. His extradition has long been hindered by geopolitical balances and historical reticence, but a series of confidential negotiations has finally led to an agreement that provides for broad technical and financial support from Istalia for the modernization and expansion of the Grand Canal of Vanuku, another crucial hub for international trade.

The announcement, which came earlier than expected, was calibrated to strengthen the confidence of Istalian markets, recently affected by the repercussions of the global crisis of the Migrant Pass. "It is a sign of stability and long-term vision", said the government spokesperson. The agreement, in fact, has considerable geopolitical implications: it will help to reduce the dependence of world trade on the Migrant Pass, offering a valid alternative for traffic between Majatra, Dovani and western Artania. According to forecasts, the strengthening of the Grand Canal of Vanuku could redraw the economic routes in the coming decades.

The return of Publio Carvelli, convicted in absentia for war crimes and responsible, according to the report of the Judicial Investigation Commissions on the Crimes of the Communist Leaders, for the prolongation of the authoritarian regime and the civil war in the country, has inflamed the political arena. The National Liberals have rejoiced, speaking of "justice finally accomplished", but even within the Socialist Democratic Party, founded by members of the Communist Party at the time in power after the anti-Carvellist split during the civil war, there has been no shortage of voices of satisfaction.

However, not everyone applauds: the New Communists, who have remained isolated in their criticism, have condemned the agreement with Vanuku, calling the worldburnist regime "hungry for money like any capitalist nation". They have also denounced Carvelli's extradition as an "act of vengeance" that risks rekindling historical and ideological tensions that have never completely subsided.

The response from Minister Secretary Saragat was not long in coming:

You cannot promote a pacification of historical memory by sweeping the past under the carpet. Carvelli betrayed the promises of democratization, he threw Istalia into civil war and was guilty of war crimes, so it is right that he should answer for his actions.

Despite protests from radical fringes, public opinion seems largely in favor of extraditing Carvelli to serve his sentence. In the meantime, the government is preparing to manage the delicate phases of the former leader's return, aware that this step could mark a new page in national reconciliation, but also a reopening of the debate on the past and collective memory.
