SANGON - Prime Minister Maurício Pires Pinho has announced that he will be the PDP candidate for president in next years presidential election. The move, confirmed by PDP deputy leader Teodósio Alcantara, is a master stroke for the Prime Minister, who has been embroiled in a political battle with President Caetano since the beginning of this term. While Caetano was weighing his options for a third run, his relative unpopularity prompted PDP party leadership to quickly decide on Pinho after he announced his intention to seek the office. President Caetano has responded by congratulating Pinho with his nomination, announcing that he will not run for a third term in a move for "party unity". Pinho has been prime minister for nearly 7 years, overseeing the implementation of many of the domestic policies of the PDP government and the country its economic transition.
Despite his closeness to policy, he is popular amongst a majority in the country, mainly because of his continued efforts to strengthen democracy and defy even his own party during that effort. Pinho, responding to the news, has thanked the party for their trust in him. "I will use this campaign to portray a clear choice between democracy and continued reform and a return to the old policies that Rosa advocates for. If elected, i will veto all legislation that stands against our new democratic order and will push rellentlesly for any new government to adopt further reforms to protect our newfound freedoms."
In every hypothetical poll so far, Pinho is seen as a clear favorite despite the PDP losing its legislative battles. Especially the new LS is causing the PDP to lose races in the polls, with Rosa currently polling to capture a large majority in the Chamber of Deputies next year.
