George's heart fell. The SAFE Act passed. He would normally support anti fascist efforts entirely. But this? It could ruin everything. Congress now had the means to basically do a purge on the military. This wasn't good. He was pacing around in his room. Was Merridan onto him already? Did one of the officers get cold feet? Did someone in the RPP turn on him and tell Merridan? No no, it couldn't be that. He did everything right. He was making sure to cover his tracks. Merridan couldn't be onto him. No. It couldn't be over like this. He was just being paranoid. He was sure of that. It had to be a coincidence. Merridan was competent. And dangerous. It had to be a case of him wanting the good PR. Yeah, yes of course! Alvarez reassured himself. The plot was fine. He just had to be more careful.

It was fine. He could afford to hold off. He wasn't in any rush. Merridan plays the long game. He'll play it too. Slow down making moves. Hold off for now. He can't work too fast. The SAFE Act was just a coincidence. He had to pretend to still be loyal. Keep Merridans trust. He would have to improvise more. He would need to keep the military safe. And loyal. No matter what. If he lost the military, he lost everything. Just a few officers is all he needs to keep the plot alive. It'll let him rebuild any lost influence should a purge occur. He couldn't help himself from being anxious about it. Baltusia deserves better than Merridan. He would have to do this for Baltusia. He could probably try to arrange for an escape into exile. But then what? Baltusia is doomed to Merridan. He couldn't give up or despair. This is just a minor set back. He hasn't lost anything yet. Just another sword hanging over his head.

He would have to slow down. Be extremely careful going forward. He wasn't in a rush. It would be worth the wait. This was a balancing act. He just had to keep reassuring himself. Somehow.
