Storm over Antinori Palace: Istalian proposals for SOMECO leak

The draft package presented by Moccia divides the opposition and ignites the nationalist front of the PNL. Fulvio Paglini leads the internal revolt: "Homeland, identity and sovereignty!"

ROMULA - The walls of Antinori Palace have failed to contain the political unrest that has been shaking the capital for days. A leak, leaked from sources close to the Ministry of the Minister Secretary of State, reportedly revealed the existence of a broad package of proposals that Minister-Secretary of State Fabrizio Moccia and the government are preparing to present to the South Majatran Economic Cooperation Organization.

According to rumors, the document, still in the drafting phase, would include measures of historic significance for the organization: a new common tariff system, protocols for the customs union, harmonized regulations on trade and industry, competition rules and mechanisms for the protection of industries in member countries and special measures for dual-use materials supply chains and trade. The package would also include a series of social and environmental provisions, inspired by the Istalian model, aimed at ensuring the protection of workers and consumers, the promotion of green policies and the protection of biodiversity.

But what immediately sparked the political storm is an even more sensitive issue: the proposal to harmonize migration policies among SOMECO member states. According to the leak, the Government intends to propose eliminating visas within the organization, allowing free movement of citizens of member countries and introducing common instruments to facilitate the signing of transnational labor contracts.

As soon as the news spread, the patriotic fringe of the National Liberal Party exploded: Fulvio Paglini, an increasingly influential figure and a critic of the party's moderate leadership, publicly denounced the government and attacked his PNL colleagues who had supported joining SOMECO. In a press conference, Paglini thundered firmly:

It wasn't enough to bow to the treaty! Now the government also wants to dissolve the boundaries of our sovereignty in the name of globalism disguised as economic cooperation.

Paglini's words quickly found echo in circles within the Hosian Democratic Union, where the conservative wing, already hostile to the SOMECO project, has strengthened thanks to the growing collaboration between Paglini himself and Francesca Pizzi, a rising young MP and the new spokesperson for the party's more traditionalist wing. Pizzi, in an interview with Il Giornale di Romula, denounced "the sellout of Istalian cultural sovereignty and the threat that globalism poses to the traditional values and spirituality of the Osiano people". There has been no shortage of polemical references from these circles to "ties with hyper-relativist and atheist nations" and the "progressive erosion of national identity" due to the social policies promoted by left-wing governments.

Despite the harshness of the attacks, the government is not at risk of a parliamentary majority: the PSD-MdV-New Communists coalition is united in supporting Moccia's regionalist and cooperative vision. Even within the PNL, the key opposition party, the proposal does not appear likely to topple the official leadership, which maintains a more pragmatic stance, favoring free trade and the free movement of workers within the SOMECO area.

In recent years, more moderate positions on immigration and social policies have emerged within the PNL, a strategy with which party leaders have sought to appeal to a younger, more cosmopolitan electorate, reflecting an increasingly less rigid and more open society. Moreover, on the economic front, many PNL members have recognized the need to be prepared for the demographic shift that is already beginning to affect the country in less specialized sectors, where immigration already plays a significant role.

But for Paglini and his supporters, this is an unacceptable trend. "History teaches us that a people who forget their roots are a people who condemn themselves to submission", declared the MP, who is now openly speaking as a possible candidate for the party leadership.
And, addressing the PNL leaders, he issued his challenge:

What direction should the party take? I have no doubts: homeland, identity, and sovereignty!

Parliamentary sources report that, despite the tensions, the package of proposals will likely be presented to Parliament in the coming weeks for approval so they can be brought to the SOMECO Council, where Istalia aims to consolidate a leading role within the organization, with the shared goal with Deltaria of creating a solid and prosperous regional economic bloc.
However, political observers and economic analysts agree: even if the majority remains solid, the open fractures within the PNL and the UOD could profoundly reshape the opposition's structure and influence the political balance of power in the coming years.
