Thanopoulos Picks Old Enemy: "Democracy must survive!"

First Minister Thanopoulos speaking to the press after the shock of the first round became clear.

18 April 5734, Helios, Kalopian Republic
Shock was allegedly the first reaction in the office of the First Minister when news became clear that Theseus Moraitou would not face Antonios Lakaridis in the second round for the presidential elections. Thanopoulos, who allegedly played a large role in having Lakaridis expelled from Phalanx, has a good personal relationship with the critical and outspoken Moraitou, even after him resigning from the first Thanopoulos cabinet over a disagreement. Whatever issues were there at the time seem to be fully resolved, as Moraitou was named Second Minister only a few months back. Rumours circulated that Thanopoulos was quietly endorsing the Kalopian Spring leader. None of that matters now, as the old enemy instead moves to the second round to face off against the opposition candidate. Kallívas, who is mostly known for featuring not pictures of himself but of President Lakaridis on his campaign posters, is an uninspiring choice for the Kalopian voter. Nonetheless, people are unhappy with the alleged behaviour of Lakaridis and the course of the government. This dissatisfaction has moved their vote towards the opposition candidate.

Today, rather begrudgingly, Thanopoulos stated that he would be endorsing Antonios Lakaridis for a second term. According to the First Minister this elections is between "the loose cannon we know" and "the right-winger that will abolish democracy", which has prompted him to choose for the loose cannon. In recent years Lakaridis seems to have mostly recovered from his moment of shame, with no new incidents reported. As a surprise to many, all his recent executive orders seem to have a rather progressive tone. The President decreased taxes for lower incomes, while raising them for the wealthy and personally legalised abortion during the first trimester after a coordinated effort by Phalanx to make it solely reserved for medical emergencies. The 'new' Lakaridis seems to have been liberated by his exile from Phalanx, keeping his own course with a clear preference for the progressive ideas and the working class. After the press conference of Moraitou, the First Minister allegedly called his colleague to try and convince him to pick a side - citing the importance of the democratic institutions of the nation and the danger of staunchly right-wing president.

After the announcement of the First Minister about his personal endorsement of his former foe, there was also an announcement from Phalanx founder Nestoras Panatos. He also declared that Phalanx would urge voters to choose Lakaridis. In a statement the academic explained that Kallívas is a far-right puppet controlled by groups that would tarnish and demolish the democratic systems of the republic. "The voter must forgive Antonios [Lakaridis] for past transgressions, and give him four more years to protect our sacred republic!" wrote the chairman of Phalanx. The runoffs are scheduled for June 1st.

Helios - Following his suprise win in the first round of this months presidential elections, Centre Party leader Theodóros Kallívas has spoken to supporters in front of his family practice, calling his advancement into the second round "a clear signal from voters." Kallívas, normally heavily criticizing the incumbent government, struck a reconilliatory tone in his address, calling for unity ahead of the second round and describing this election "as a potential turning point for our country."

His Centre Party is known for its vocal oppossition to presidentialism, with Kallívas himself saying that he "is running to diminish" the position of President. The presidential candidate seems to acknowledge however that such a change might not be happening this term, instead pledging to focus "on issues where we can both give more autonomy to local communities, while also maintaining sensible, moral leadership." He further reiterated that he will not oppose everything the government brings forward but will "measure their actions on a scale that takes into account the diverse nature of the electorate."

As hinted at in earlier points during his campaign, Kallívas announced that if elected he would renounce his Centre Party leadership and only serve one term as president.

Quote:Our main goal is bringing back intergrity and common sense within the presidency. I do not seek power. I am not running for my party. I am running for Kalopia and with the firm believe that i can truly be a transitional president that may usher in a period of political stability

When asked whether he things the government might collapse before the second round due to split support on the Law on Prohibiting Non-Governmental Paramilitary Outfits, Kallívas refused to comment, stating that his focus "is on the presidential race" and that the current situation in the government "does show the need for a change on that front."

After the mediocre results in both the Parliament and Presidential Elections , there is critisism from certain KDP members, about the party's leadership and especially KDP Chairwoman and Founder, Eirene Stagakes. Minister of Science and Technology Alexios Papapas has stirred speculation by stating after a very heated debate in the party's Headquarters, about how to vote on the Law on Prohibiting Non-Governmental Paramilitary Outfits , that, "KDP needs to do some changes if it is to survive this political landscape especially in the centre right now. Changes in the way certain things are handled, more transparency and focus on our core values".
Expert political analysts, say that the Chairwoman's decision to vote in favor of the bill despite the First Minister's dissapproval was not very well received, especially from the ministers of KDP serving under Thanopoulos.
There seems to be some kind of "party factionalism" between Chairwoman Stagakes and former Vice Chairman Foivos Lysandrou, with some supporting Stagakes "one woman show" leadership style and other more technocratic members stating that Lysandrou may lack the Chairwoman's charisma but is more skilled in matters of governance.
Regardless, KDP leadership will hold a meeting tomorrow, before the Party's Conference in July.

Campaign Analysis: we are witnessing the Lakaridis Circus

By Fatima Ibrahimi - 5 May 5734
The '34 presidential elections were scheduled ahead of the end of President Lakaridis' term with his consent after an attempt was made by the government and higher court to align elections with a two year gap. None of the involved parties accounted for the collapse of several groups represented in parliament, and right after the parliamentary elections campaign the volunteers were drafted again for the presidential elections of 5734. The tone however, could not be much different if one tried. Whereas the '33 parliamentary elections were about continuing the coalition and pressing issues like housing, benefits, and the status of minorities within the Republic the opposite happened for the current campaign. The prelude to the first round was all rather quiet, campaigners walked around, even the President himself has managed to scrounge together an army of volunteers that answer to a non-profit called Chtízontas to Éthnos or Building the Nation, which also became the campaign slogan for former real estate mogul and current head of state Antonios Lakaridis.

Now, in the weeks up to the runoffs on June 1st the tone of the campaign has shifted entirely. The elections are between winner of round one, Theodóros Kallívas of the right-wing Centre Party, and current President Antonios Lakaridis, officially independent but known to have close ties to many within Phalanx and openly fraternises with many within the ranks of Kalopian Spring. The campaign however seems to be entirely about Antonios Lakaridis. His own campaign prominently features himself, and like the previous elections 'the whirlwind', as some inside the Presidential Manor have come to call him, goes from visit to visit to meet as many people as he can. The Kallívas campaign also seems to be prominently featuring Lakaridis, with the campaign team even foregoing to feature their own candidate on the poster and instead placing a giant picture of a smiling Lakaridis with small devil's horns. Retired campaign strategist Vishkullore Marku has criticised the course, calling it a bad call to give free publicity to your main opponent: "All the Centre Party are doing is increasingly imprinting Lakaridis in the visual memory of the voter, that is something you want to avoid, you want the voter to think about your candidate, not your rival." Meanwhile, the Lakaridis campaign avoids even discussing Kallívas, besides alluding to great repercussions against democracy if the current President loses.

Only a few days ago Antonios Lakaridis went viral after showing up to the gym of Hektor Nikandros. The two are often cited as sworn enemies since Lakaridis accused Nikandros of steroid abuse and Nikandros in turn calling the President a "flabby man". The last comment seems to have stuck with the President, who appeared more fit than before and actively participated in a strict regimen set by the Director-General of Dýnamis. The two men seemed to get along well, even though Nikandros has currently endorsed Kallívas for president. When even the friends of Kallívas prefer to hang out with Lakaridis, you truly know you are in the Lakaridis Circus.

Helios - Following his defeat in the recent presidential elections, Theodóros Kallívas has announced that he will be resigning as leader of the Centre Party effective immediately. By doing so, the 68 year old hands over party leadership to the 39 year old deputy-leader of the party, Katarina Papatzi, who will be formally elected to the position of leader at the next party congress.

The decision was made "after intense discussions with my family, my party and my closest confidants" said a visibly emotional  Kallívas during a press conference. With the departure of Kallívas the Centre Party will experience its first leadership change since its founding, welcoming the young Papatzi into the spotlight.

Papatzi has been known within the party as a capable lawmaker, chairing multiple committees and serving as deputy leader under  Kallívas for over three years now. She is known as a more moderate figure compared to her mentor, alligning with the Future Faction politics of "moderate populism" and being more socially progressive on certain issues. Papatzi immediately announced that the party would use its green as its main colour again, with the deep blue often associated with the conservative elements within the party.

While Papatzi is already preparing to "modernize" the Centre Party in her new leadership role, Kallívas will formally leave parliament next month, returning to his family practice in Siphina and leaving party politics "to the new generation."

Telemachos Chondrotsis elected new general secretary of Kalopian Spring as Moraitou resigns over election results
[Image: IBZY1tz.png]
The Kalopian Herald — March 5735

HELIOS – Following the early elections triggered by the government crisis caused by First Minister Thanopoulos' decision to kick Kalopian Spring out of government over the latter's decision to vote in favor of a presidential veto override, Kalopian Spring has fallen to the fourth place, losing seven seats and a million voters since December 5733 elections. As a result, Theseus Moraitou decided to put an end to his rule over the party and call for a leadership election, saying that he could no longer "in good faith" continue leading the party.

Now, with 68% of the votes, Thalassan regional leader Telemachos Chondrotsis has been elected as the new general secretary. The 32-year-old former professional rower and international athlete, affiliated to Kalopian Spring since 5730, is one of the party's most visible figures, both because of his sporting profile and the results in Thalassa, the Kalopian region where the party gets its better results. In his victory speech, Mr. Chondrotsis burned all the bridges with their former allies, saying that Phalanx had "all but effectively terminated any possibilty of understanding" with Kalopian Spring after expelling the party from government without "proper consultation first", and criticized his predecessor's "lack of future vision" for returning back to government.

"We have seen what Phalanx is capable of. And still, and after saying otherwise, the leadership of the party decided not only to continue in a failing government, but also to give its support to a presidential candidate proposed and supported by the very same party, and whose election is what ultimately ended in our early dismissal from government. But we take note of it. This is how loyalty to a government is rewarded: by using external issues as a weapon as if you were a political rival, without any chances or explanations. But this secretariat will not make the same mistakes".

The new general secretary of the party has promised a "more combative style of parliamentarism", and signals a turn in the recent KA's legislative activity, including a closer collaboration with left-wing parties in parliament – most prominently, the Party for Labor Democracy

                          Chairwoman Stagakes resigns!
This is just in! Earlier this morning KDP Chairwoman and founder Eirene Stagakes, resigned from her Party position after tremendous pressure from members of the KDP Leadership Comitee. Leading the charge against founder Stagakes was mainly the General Secretary Nikodemos Krateros (also Minister of Finance) and former party Dep.Chairman Foivos Lysandrou. Due to party protocol and because of the "shaky" political ground after the last elections, Deputy Chairman and Minister of Trade and Industry Georgios Karassos will be provisional Chairman for the time being, leading the party in the post-Stagakes era. Concrete reason has not been given about Stagake's resignation, but several pundits speculate it was pressure from many party members that felt let down after several shortcomings of the Chairwoman such as low presidential candidate score, inability to win more seats in the Parliament in several key elections, and not promoting the works of several party members that served as ministers in the government such as Minister of Infrastructure Nikiforos Parnassos.
Many sources claim that elections for a new chairman may start when the matter of the Fourth Thanopoulos Government is settled and favorites appear to be current provisional Chairman Georgios Karassos, party MP Iris Laimou (also founder of the organisation Women in Politics) and current Minister of Science, Technology and Development, Alexios Papapas.

 PARTY CHAIRMAN ELECTED FOR KDP
After the resignation of party Founder and chairwoman Stagakes, there was enough speculation about whether Dep. Chairman and former minister Georgios Karassos, was able to lead the party forward as a provisional chairman. After many long sessions of the party's commitee there where 2 possible solutions on the succession of mrs. Stagakes. Either there was a party election from all the members of the party or Deputy Chairman Karassos would be promoted to the Chairman position. The party's executive commitee decided unanimously that it was in the party's best interest for mr. Karassos promotion as an election with tensions rising in the country, could end up causing strife and factioneering inside the KDP itself. Mr. Karassos himself decided to lead the KDP and appeared as a universally accepted figure as both his potential "opponents" in the struggle would have been mrs. Iris Laimou, an extreme Stagakes supporter, and technocrat Alexios Papapas (also former minister of Science). Both of them supported and congratulated publicly the new chairman, and wished that KDP flourishes under his leadership. Karassos, 48, is a former trade and maritime trade lawyer , has served as Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism and is considered to be a more "traditional conservative" than Stagakes, less popular but more leaning towards state security, secularism and centralized government which is already a core axis for the KDP.
A new Dep.Chairman will be selected and favorites include former Minister Papapas and other prominent party members like Minister of Foreign, Traianos Gregoriou

THE HOUSE THAT ASCENT BUILT
Inside the private world of Hektor Nikandros.

There is a particular kind of irony in standing at the gate of the Nikandros residence, a big house, really more of an estate, north of Helios. The man who lives here has spent two decades attacking inherited wealth, the idle rich, "bourgeois decadence," the accumulation of money by sedentary and "flabby men." He is not himself a member of government, citing his commitment to the movement above mere office, but his lieutenants and protégés (Oh just you wait until we tell you about Ajax) have become rather instrumental in Phalanx's continued grip on power.
In this estate he currently employs a staff of nine. Nine. A former member of it, Sofía, agreed to speak with us. She worked in the Nikandros home for the better part of eleven years. "I am not angry at them," she told us, more than once, over the afternoons we spoke. "It is a good house to work in. He is not cruel."
Hektor Nikandros was born in 5683 into what his party's literature describes, when it bothers to describe it at all, as "humble origins." The reality was far harsher, and actually quite sad. His mother was killed in a street accident when he was eight. His father suffered a breakdown and was committed. Stephanos, his elder brother, kept the family fed for a few years and then died of a lung infection. The boy Hektor and his younger sister, Thaleia, lived on the streets of Helios. He was taken in, eventually, by a clergyman who brought him to an Action Group gym. So far, so saintly. Hold that thought.
Because before Hektor Nikandros was a revolutionary, he was a quantitative trader. After university he went to Quadriga, yes that Quadriga, that private equity firm buying up every family home. Nikandros was, by every account, ferociously good at it. He made himself wealthy. Not comfortable. Wealthy. And he made it in precisely the trade his own doctrine would later spend two decades condemning. Funny, that.
"He left the finance in 5717," Sofía says. "He talks about it like he walked away from it. He calls it 'narrow' and 'empty.' But he didn't walk away from the money." No. No, they never do.
The investments, we are told by a second source, a former business manager for the family who spoke on condition of total anonymity, were never wound down. "He doesn't trade himself anymore, hasn't in years," the manager said. "To be frank, he doesn't really need to. Several firms manage the bulk of his assets now. A number arrives every quarter that most Kalopians wouldn't earn in a lifetime, and he lifts not a finger for it." The idle man of accumulation, sitting far from the labour. We believe those are his words.
And then there is Kassandra. Every single person we spoke to said it first, unprompted: the marriage appears to be genuinely, almost nauseatingly happy. Kassandra Nikandrou, née Stylianou, married Hektor in 5708. The staff adore her. The marriage, by all accounts, is rock solid. Yawn.
So, and I bet you are bored already. A man of real and terrible childhood poverty, who became rich in the most bourgeois trade imaginable, who built a movement against exactly that, who lives in a large house with nine staff, and a happy marriage. God, how dull, some sort of sappy film. It would be hypocrisy, perhaps, and not a very interesting one. What's new, another rich politician railing against the rich. Except for the children. Oh. I bet we have your attention now.
Alexios
[Image: Patrick-Schwarzenegger-debut-on-The-Whit...&strip=all]
— Images of Alexios from his brief stint as a model

Alexios Nikandros is twenty-six, profoundly useless, and, as stated by his own father loudly and in company, a great disappointment.
"With Alexios it is disappointment, a constant look and constant words of disappointment," Sofía says.
The accounts paint a young man of genuine charm and not a single applied talent to his name. "Everyone likes Alexios," a former driver told us. "He is the most likeable person in that family by a distance. And very good looking. He could talk to anyone, quite charming. He just never does anything with it." The staff describe a parade of abandoned beginnings: a law course left after a term, a modelling career he was asked to leave, a fencing phase, languages picked up and dropped, and most recently some sort of business venture that, by Sofía's account, never advanced past Alexios asking his father for the start-up capital. "It was clear he had little idea what the business would even be about. He kept talking about connecting people, a social broker, logistics." She laughs. "I don't think he even knew what logistics. Needless to say, he did not get the money."
The business manager, present at the meeting, recounts part of it.
Alexios: "I'd be overseeing it."
Nikandros: "Overseeing what, precisely."
Alexios: "The logistics."
Nikandros: "Which logistics."
A silence.
Alexios: "There would be people under me who handle that part."
Nikandros: "Name one thing you have finished in the last half decade."
Alexios: "There was the modelling campaign."
Nikandros: "BAH! That was four years ago, and they asked you to leave after two shoots."
Alexios: "Well. I finished those two shoots."
Sofía tells us Nikandros says the cruelest things about his eldest warmly, and at the table. "He told a guest that Alexios was 'sitting right there in a good jacket, the great grief of my life,' pointing at him." She pauses. "And the terrible thing is he meant it almost tenderly. He was not trying to wound the boy. In his mind I think it was simply an observation." A guest who confirmed the broad outline put it less generously: "He talks about Alexios like a bad investment. Not a son. A disappointing asset." Needless to say Alexios lives a lavish life, and lives at home, and has never had a real job.

Philon
[Image: mega703544002-1692214794730.jpg]
— Philon last summer

If Alexios is disappointment, Philon is the neverending project.
Philon, the second son, twenty, has struggled with his weight since boyhood, which, given that both his father and his younger brother are accomplished athletes, is a rather awkward fact to have sitting at the dinner table. The doctrine that made the family name holds, ad nauseam, that the body is "the first material," the first visible proof of one's discipline. And the father has, by every account, proven utterly unable to leave his son's failure in this department.
"He takes him to the gyms, constantly," Sofía says. "His own old gyms. To train him. In front of people."
Multiple sources, including a former trainer at one of the Action Group halls who spoke briefly and nervously, describe the sessions as painful to witness. "The Director-General would correct his form loudly," the trainer said. "In a full room. Telling him the body 'does not lie.' Or his favourite, I suppose it was meant as motivation, 'the magnificent ground to be covered.' He would poke the boy's belly and say, 'Look at all this progress to be made, magnificent!' Everyone in the hall would be staring at the floor."
Sofía tells us the family has their clothes tailored regularly, in no small part because the father's own cycle of bulks and cuts demands it. "Every winter they let the trousers out a little, Philon included. And every time, when Philon is being measured, Nikandros tells the tailor, 'You watch, by spring we will take that in three inches.' I don't believe Philon has ever once had his trousers taken in."
A nurse who briefly attended the household when Kassandra was unwell told Sofía, who told us, that she once watched Nikandros stop dead mid-sentence at dinner, mid-discourse, on the subject of moderation and appetite no less, because he had spotted Philon reaching for another bread roll. "The nurse said he just stopped talking. Watched the boy eat the roll. Never finished the thought. The whole table sat there. Quite, waiting for Nikandros to start talking again, it was like watching a duck, Nikandros kept letting out a few squaking sounds until somebody changed the subject."
The party and parliamentary staff say Philon is the only subject on Terra that can reliably stop Nikandros mid-lecture, and Nikandros is a man famous for his verbosity . "You want to end one of his speeches early," Sofía says, "you mention Philon. It is the one thing in the world that makes that man go quiet."
And yet, Sofía insists, there is love in it, which is precisely what makes it unbearable rather than merely cold. "He clears his mornings for the boy. His own mornings, worth more than gold to him, he gives to Philon for the training. He thinks the mornings are the gift. He cannot understand that the boy would trade every morning he has left to never be taken to that gym again." There is a litany of diet programmes, regimes, shakers, bands, running shorts and shoes that Nikandros buys or designs personally, with enormous care, for Philon every year. A constant, loving microscope trained on the one son who would give anything to be left alone.

Damon
[Image: hlh030122cvrmarch-002-1643744645.png?cro...size=980:*]
— Damon posing for one of his many bodybuilding wins
And then there is Damon, and with Damon, dear reader, the whole thing tips from sad into genuinely strange.
Damon is the youngest, eighteen, and by every measure the perfect son. He has trained since he was twelve at North Helios Hall, his father's own old gym. He competes. He placed as a finalist this year and is openly tipped, in the bodybuilding press, for a future run at the Demetriad title, the very title his father won four times over. He is top of his mathematics class at Helios University, his father's own degree. He is, in the burtal terms of the ideology, the most formed of the three. The living proof of the entire doctrine.
His father does not appear to know he exists.
We want to be very careful here, because this is the most extraordinary claim in the piece, and we put it to multiple sources independently. They told us versions of the same thing. We do not mean the father is negligent, or absent. We mean he does not appear to be aware that his third son exists.
"He forgets him," Sofía says, and she is not laughing now. "He forgets him the way you forget what you had for breakfast two days ago. Truly forgets."
It is not, the staff insist, a estrangement. That would have a cause, a falling-out, some buried grievance, and there is none. "They never fought," Sofía says. "There is no story. That is the thing people keep waiting for me to tell, the big quarrel, the day it all went wrong between them. There isn't one. You cannot fall out with someone you were never quite aware of."
She describes the room. "Mr. Nikandros would come up the corridor and see a room with a young man's things in it, the training kit, the competition photos, and he would be confused. He would ask, 'Why is the guest room in such a disordered state, who has been in the guest room.' And I would say, 'That is Damon's room, sir. Your son's room.' And he would say, 'Ah, yes, of course,' and go on. And the next month, the next week, sometimes the same afternoon, he would ask me again." The house has many guest rooms. This one is Damon's childhood bedroom. The three boys' rooms sit in a row, and none has ever moved from them, save when each left for university, excepting Alexios, who, naturally, still lives at home.
There are five places set at the family table by default. Nearly every night Nikandros asks after the fifth: "are we expecting someone?" Damon has eaten at that table for eighteen years. When the family photographs come out, Sofía says, Nikandros will sometimes point at Damon, his own son, ask who the young man is, accept whatever answer he is given, "a friend of Alexios's," "a boy from the Hall," and move on. "I stopped correcting him on the photographs," Sofía admits.
The most consistent stories, across every source, are the introductions. At functions, party events, competitions, Nikandros has reportedly introduced himself to his own son, more than once, as one does to a stranger.
A party aide, who for obvious reasons would not be named, described a scene backstage at a fitness exhibition. "He was going down the line of competitors, shaking hands, asking each what club they trained at. He gets to Damon. Asks him his club. Damon says 'North Helios,' the Director-General's own hall. And Nikandros lights up: 'My own old club, you could not have chosen better, son.' Calls him 'son' the way he calls every young man 'son.' Then he turns the boy to face the others and tells him to 'go out there and show them what the club's got.' The whole time, no idea he is talking to his own child. None. I had to lean in and give him the name. He repeated it like a stranger's. 'Damon. Good. Strong name.'"
[Image: Arnold-Schwarzeneggers-son-Joseph-Baena-...&strip=all]
— Damon at an Action Group gym, winning a junior division. His father is in the background, and would introduce himself to Damon shortly after.
Another source, present at a reception, watched Nikandros introduce his family to a delegation, naming his wife, naming Alexios, naming Philon, then arriving at the large young man standing directly beside Philon, faltering completely, and recovering with a joke: that Damon was "so often at the Hall that I forget he is also occasionally a member of this family." The delegation laughed. A father's affectionate joke. "But it was not a joke," the source said.
The details, when he does reach for them, come out wrong, and confidently so. He has told people Damon is sixteen, or twenty, or twelve; the boy is eighteen. He has said the boy started training at fourteen; it was twelve. He has, on at least one occasion Sofía heard of from Kassandra, asked Damon at a family gathering where his "family" was from, and complimented the young man on having "a Helios look about him."
"The madam finds it the hardest of anything," Sofía says quietly. "With Alexios and Philon, at least he sees them. Too much, in Philon's case. But Damon he simply does not see, and Damon is the good one, Damon never gave anybody a moment's trouble, Damon did everything the father's books say a man should do, and the father looks straight through him. She says his name a great deal. I think she is making up the difference on purpose."
We asked Sofía the obvious question. Is the man unwell.
She was careful. "I am not a doctor. I will only tell you what I saw, and what I saw was a father who looked at the one child who turned out exactly as he had always preached a child should, and did not recognise him. A doctor did come once, on the madam's orders. He said it was as inexplicable to him as it was to us." She paused, and giggled. "You know how they say a T-Rex can only see you if you move, or at least the film says so? Well, the staff used to joke it was the opposite with Nikandros. He could only see you if you stayed still. And Damon, you see, is not still much."
It should be noted, that no source ever once described Nikandros as unkind to Damon. The opposite. Every one of these encounters ends the same way: with warmth. He claps the boy on the shoulder. He tells him he has "got it," that he "can always tell the ones who have it." He is, to the son he cannot recognise, unfailingly, generously, hopelessly kind. He simply does not know who the boy is. "He is kinder to Damon than to either of the others," Sofía says. "Of course he is. You are always kindest to a stranger who admires you."

So what are we to make of this house that ascent built.

The Kalopian Tattler is, frankly, at a loss, and we are not often at a loss. That he is a strange man is perhaps the only firm conclusion on offer. Here is the great theorist of human perfection, a man who has told an entire nation that the unformed life is a moral failure, and what has all that towering drive produced under his own roof? A layabout eldest who has finished nothing in half a decade but two photo shoots he was asked to leave. A second son the great improver cannot improve, poked in the belly in front of strangers and promised, every spring, three inches that never come off. And a third, the one boy who did everything the books command, top of the father's own old degree, tipped for the father's own old title, whom the father does not reliably seem to know exists.
Make of it what you will. We could not.

Dýnamis Backs Early Election Call as Parliament Moves Toward Dissolution
Despite signs of pressure in the polls, the party votes in favour of returning to the people.
-
Helios, May 5736. With parliament short forty-six seats after the dissolution of several parties, Dýnamis has voted with the majority to return the question to the people.
-
Director-General Hektor Nikandros, speaking on the vote:
"We must search for greater challenges and face discomfort with all the resolve we can muster, and then some more. When before us stands the insurmountable, we must seek, each supporting one another, to ascend it. It is in the great act of the people's acclamation, in the moment when the nation is summoned again to judge, choose, and command its own future, that political life is renewed."
-
"A government that fears the people's verdict has already confessed its weakness. Let the parties stand before Kalopia. Let the people decide who has the discipline, courage, and vision to carry the Republic forward."
-
Political Secretary Ajax Mavros, on the spirit of the thing:
"I do not like it when people say do not change. I hope I change. I hope I get better and better and better. So let us take a leap of faith."

The some other parties will sneer, as they always do, that we speak in poetry, that we love totally the beautiful and good. Let them. We would rather speak in poetry than in the bland managerial language, forever defending what already exists, forever afraid of the leap, forever afraid. They called the honest testing of a man's body, his strength, his resolve, his discipline, before his peers a farce. They called our founder a stranger and then admitted, in the same breath, they had simply never bothered to learn his name. These are small men, afraid of feeling, afraid of effort, afraid of the ascent, these are scared men. Men who speak in slop and congratulate one another for having felt something, not knowing how much more there is to feel, how much more they could be, and who cannot answer a simple question put twice across the chamber floor: how much, Mr. Chondrotsis, how much do you bench?

We deserve a nation where all persons can feel the triumph of knowing the fullness of themselves, and not be brought down by managerialism or mediocrity. Where all persons face discomfort and challenge knowing their fellow citizen is beside them, and that they can ascend the insurmountable. The movement goes to the country larger than it has ever been, and unafraid. The Dynamic Revolution is near at hand, all Kalopians deserve to live their lives to the fullest potential.

Faster toward progress. Upward to ascent.
