Huang Zitao gives a thumbs up to supporters from his campaign bus
On the Campaign Trail with the Lotus Party
Story by Hao Luoyang, 10-15 July 4285
The Lotus Party has been campaigning hard in the months following the Xiandai bribery scandal revelations which sent shockwaves through Indrala's political scene. The Southern Voice spent three days with Lotus Party leader Huang Zitao as he traversed the nation, looking to gain support and win the Lotus Party's first majority mandate.
Huang wades through the crowd as he attempts to enter the Mudanwan Exhibition and Convention Centre for a rally that afternoon
On Monday, the Lotus Party campaign bus rolled into Mudanwan for an afternoon rally where he was greeted by a large crowd waiting outside the Mudanwan Exhibition and Convention Centre. Once inside, Huang spoke to around five-hundred supporters, where he blasted the current Republican government:
Quote:The Chancellor has no party, the governing party has no leader, and our country is void of stability. However, looking back on my life, my greatest realization is that pessimism, prejudice and despair are not inevitable. What we need is to rebuild trust, reestablish unity and rekindle hope. With the right measure of all three, we can find the solutions, and we can write the history that we want to see.
Huang and his aids slept on the bus overnight as it traveled to the rural village of Yanghe in Anle Province, where he toured a secondary school newly-renovated with funds resulting from the Lotus Party's Education Reform Omnibus Bill. He used the opportunity to reaffirm the Lotus Party's commitment to students and young people. However, later that evening during a town hall with local Lotus Party candidates, Huang was hit on the head by an egg thrown by a protester. Multiple protestors stood up and chanted "Wake up! Wake up!" as security struggled to get them under control.
Huang was whisked off the stage for around three minutes where he was cleaned up. "I'm lucky that I didn't choose to wear a good suit today," Huang joked as he retook the stage, "My doctor said I should eat fewer eggs, but luckily he said nothing about wearing them!" Huang's tone quickly became serious, however, as security was still rangling with the protestors:
Quote:Let them go! Don't harm them! No citizen of this Republic should ever have their voice silenced! In reality, these people should have every right to throw eggs at me, and all the other Indralan politicians. Why? Because we have failed you. *Huang bows* For the past number of years, our National Conference has been plagued with controversy and scandal. Bribery and corruption. "Wake up." That's what they're chanting, right? On occasion, as a politician, I need a reminder to wake up, and so I thank you. I vow to you today that I will wake up, and as your Chancellor, I will instruct the Supreme Prosecution Service, to begin a full and thorough investigation of all Conference Representatives for any possible indication of corruption on my part, or on the part of my colleagues on my first day in office. If there is even a hint of corruption found, we will resign and take responsibility for our crimes immediately. I will also ensure the SPS that any criminal charges leveled against a Representative will be unobstructed by my government. Enough is enough!
The last part of his statement elicited thunderous applause from the small auditorium in which the event was held.
The last day we spent with Huang and his team was in Tian'an, where the Lotus Party had organized a mass outdoor rally in a public square. We were told that the organizers had expected around 11,000 people but were shocked when nearly 40,000 people attended the rally.
Huang gave a 45 minute speech, which concluded with the following:
Quote:...It's true, our nation's current state is grim. Looking back on history, however, you will find that darkness always gives way to light – if only we can hold on to optimism, hope and shared faith in one another. I will work toward putting our country back on its feet and helping all of you realize your dreams, as Indralans. I implore all of you today, especially our young people, as I always have: never stop dreaming until your dreams come true!

Lotus Party Wins Minority Government
Huang Zitao is elected Chancellor with 76.33% on the first ballot
Tian'an, Han - 22 November 4285
Fireworks erupt over the Lotus Party Election night HQ as the party is declared as winning a minority government by the media
Election Night
As results poured in from Southern Indrala, it was clear that the night would end in the Lotus Party's favour. In the Republican home province of Shu, support for the government had all but disintegrated as the Lotus Party captured over 67.5% of the vote. This inspired confidence within the Tian'an National Stadium, which was filled with nearly 50,000 Lotus Party supporters and members from all across the nation. As the Lotus Party continued to overperform in the South, it became clear that the Lotus Party would be forming the next government.
Huang Zitao Elected Chancellor
Half-way through the legislative results, it was announced that Huang Zitao had won 76.33% of the popular vote on the first ballot. Lotus Party President Wei Cheng walked onto the stage to the thunderous and jubilant applause of the stadium:
We have just received some very good news. *applause* Tonight has been and will continue to be a momentous event in the history of our movement! They're still counting votes and every vote should count, and so we will be coming back out very soon, but I just wanted to come out and say thank you to each and every one of you on behalf of our Chancellor-elect... *applause* ... for all of your incredible hard work, it seems that it has certainly paid off. Thank you!
Vote Splitting in Lotus Party Heartland
As votes came in from the North, the celebrations became somewhat more subdued as it became clear that the Lotus Party had lost it's foundational home province Jiaozhi. Additionally, the Lotus Party lost Anle, a traditional bastion of support for the party. The leftist National Awakening Party, exceeding prior expectations, had split the vote between the Lotus Party in these provinces, leading to a Republican victory. It was in this moment that supporters realized that the Lotus Party would be elected to a minority government, rather than a majority, as they had gone into the election over-confident in their support in the North.
Huang Zitao is applauded by staffers backstage as he heads to give his acceptance speech
Fireworks Erupt as Huang Zitao Takes The Stage
Excerpts from Huang Zitao's acceptance speech:
Quote:...To every Indralan from every direction: Spring has arrived! You voted for change – for better health care, for better schools and for good family-supporting jobs. We will answer your call.
You voted for a society where no one is left out, and no one is left behind. We will answer your call.
I want to speak for a moment about our young people. In Tian'an Plaza, thousands of citizens formed an ocean of light with their mobile phones, illuminating their young faces, and they sent the most sincere wishes for a united Indrala. It reminded me why I got into politics in the first place: So that we could build an Indrala where our young people dare to look cynicism in the eye as they dream big, and never stop fighting until their dreams come true. My heart remains the same, only more humble. I will dedicate my body and mind to the service of all Indralans.
Together, we defeated the idea that Indralans should be satisfied with less, that good enough is good enough and that better just isn’t possible. Well, my friends, this is Indrala, and in Indrala better is always possible. Thank you!

Liao My Arrested in Kimlien, Extradited to Indrala Today
Quote:Hao Yaling, Anchor: The Supreme Prosecution Service announced yesterday that Liao My, the fugitive former-president of the Republican Party had been arrested after a joint operation with Kimlien police agencies. Liao My's arrest comes after an international fugitive notice was issued last August for a number of charges in association with the Xiandai bribery scandal. Today, Liao My arrived at the Tian'an International Airport where she will be transported to the Han Provincial Women's Prison.
Enlisting the help of local male escorts, Liao My was arrested by Kimlien authorities in a presidential hotel suite in Nam Thành after an investigation that had spanned over 8 weeks. Police say that they found two illegal firearms, $13m in cash and $2m more in jewelry and designer-wares. Local police also claim to have found a small amount of cocaine. Prosecutors explained that Liao had taken an executive jet from Mudanwan to Nam Thành sometime around 13-16 July 4285, after it became clear that she would be criminally charged in association with the Xiandai bribery scandal. Prosecutors say that they found evidence that Liao My was planning to travel Lourenne by way of Vorona. The Supreme Prosecution Service announced that they will be moving forward with charges against Liao My including perjury, bribery, coercion, leaking government secrets, failing to appear in court, resisting arrest and embezzlement. She is expected to make her first court appearance in June.
Linda Wong Leaves Television to Become Minister of Finance
Quote:Tao Yaling, Anchor: Businesswoman Linda Wong has been a fixture of Indralan economic news broadcasting for the past 20 years with her show "Wong Weighs In" on this network. The CEO of the Wong Holdings, one of the largest stock portfolios in the nation, Linda Wong is one of Indrala's wealthiest women and most successful business leaders. Wong first became active in politics during the manufacturing crisis of 4255, when she publically joined the Lotus Party after criticizing the RC's "disgusting, dumb and dimwitted neglect of our economy." Wong again made headlines after announcing her run for the Lotus Party leadership in 4270. During that election, Wong asked her supporters in an email to support Huang Zitao as their second choice in the preferential ballot, a move which many credit with ensuring his victory.
Following the election last November which saw the Lotus Party form a minority government, Huang Zitao called on Wong to serve as the Finance Minister for his government. Wong says she accepted immediately:
Quote:*Video Clip of Wong Speaking to Media*
Wong: I am honoured to have been called upon by the Honourable Chancellor to serve within his government. It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to serve this country which we all hold so dear, and so I immediately and enthusiastically accepted the call.
Heat Wave Draws Visitors To Southern Indrala
Quote:Tao Yaling, Anchor: As a heatwave moves across Southern Indrala, Han and Shu have seen an influx of tourists from around the nation. Correspondent Yu Chin spent some time in Nandu, Shu today.
Yu Chin, TNN correspondent: I'm standing here at Nandu Beach, and as you can see there are plenty of people out enjoying the unseasonably warm weather. Many of the people you see on the beach are tourists from the North who have flocked to Shu and Han to enjoy this first sight of spring. Local businesses are thrilled by the influx of tourists, with many hotels increasing the prices of their rooms to match the demand and entrepreneurial locals setting up ice-cream stands up and down the beach.
Shi Yawen Institute for Democracy Studies Democracy Index To Be Released in 4288
Quote:Shao Yuhan, Anchor: Dean Nguyen Thanh Thai of the Shi Yawen Institute for Democracy Studies announced today that the Institute will be releasing its second Democracy Index in two years. The last index, released in 4272, sent shockwaves throughout the world with governments both denouncing and praising it. Despite being the most robust democratic measurement in recent memory, it was criticized within academic circles as being short-sighted and failing to analyze various factors that contribute to a truly healthy democracy. The 4272 Democracy Index was based around a restrictive criterion which focused on legislation within each nation across the world as the primary indicator of democratic fitness. Dean Nguyen has pledged that the newest Democracy Index will be broader to avoid repeating this flaw:
Quote:*Video Clip of Nguyen Speaking to Media*
Dean Nguyen: We have expanded both our legislative criterion and also our field of objective analysis based on political culture, media use, militarization, etc. to better reflect the political reality in each nation. What many people criticize about our legislative focus is simply incorrect, in our view. For instance, a nation with legislation which ensures a heavily censored media is simply undemocratic. Likewise, a nation with a very free media cannot claim to be purely authoritarian. We stand by the 4272 Democracy Index and anticipate that the 4288 Index will enhance the democratic debate even further.

ZHANG ZEMIN ELECTED AS NEW REPUBLICAN LEADER
Only 42% of eligible voters cast their ballot to choose the new leader of the Republicans

Zhang Zemin waving to supporters on his way out of the Agricultural Conference Centre in Shu Province
July 15, 4287
Hanzhou, Shu: With only a small minority of Republican voters casting their ballots, Zhang Zemin took the stage of the Agricultural Conference Centre in Shu Province as the new leader of his party which has gone from star status to rehab following the Xiandai Scandals. Mr. Zhang is now charged with the heavy task of rebuilding his party from the bottom up and attempting to fortify his party as a credible opposition to Huang Zitao’s governing Lotus Party. Mr. Zhang won with 58% of the vote, with the rest of the ballots going to lifelong orphan Deng Jia and absentee ballots.
"REBIRTH"
Zhang Zemin was quiet and made only a few remarks after his victory, however his few words were grave:
Quote:Thank you for your trust. I have only this to say: It is time for us to be humble. We will not celebrate or toast to our future until our party is rebuilt and retooled. It is time for a rebirth of this party. From her ashes, Song Yi will be born again through each and every one of us. We will never lose our compassion again.
”ABUNDANCE AND WEALTH”
The Republicans have introduced a new party logo in an attempt to rejuvenate their image and regain the attention of Indralans. Zhang Zemin made it a commitment to improve the party’s image and focus on communication rather than bureaucracy:
Quote:This new logo symbolizes everything that we are striving for. Indrala is known for its vast wealth and we intend on not only growing this fortune, but protecting it for future generations – indicated by the glowing gold sun. This new image will prove to Indralans that we are here for them eternally

The Republicans' new party logo
Mr. Zhang has yet to name a shadow cabinet or even propose a bill in the National Conference, but pundits are anticipating a bold agenda from the party which has a lot of work to do if they want to remain competitive in the future.
More to come…

Quote:Co-Anchor Han Jiang: Good morning, I am Han Jiang and thank you for tuning into the Tian'an News Network. Residents of Shu and Southern Han are waking up to the extreme winds and waves of typhoon Yutu. It became clear late last night and early this morning that the category-four typhoon would only strengthen in the coming days. Chancellor Huang issued a mandatory evacuation order three days ago, but it is clear that many have decided to remain where they are. The Environment Ministry has predicted that typhoon Yutu will make landfall around 8:00 am tomorrow. Here are some videos sent in from residents of Nandu, Shu as the typhoon approaches this morning.
Quote:Co-Anchor Hao Yaling: Frightening images anchor Han. We go live now to reporter Tian Chang who is standing at Nandu beach. Reporter Tian?
Reporter Tian Chang: Thank you anchor Hao. That's right, I'm standing... Ah! [explitive] HELP!
Co-Anchor Hao Yaling: Oh dear. Oh no. It seems we lost connection to Reporter Tian. We here in the newsroom will do our very best to ensure we reconnect with Reporter Tian.
Chancellor Huang Addresses the Nation, Dispatches More Soldiers to Southern Indrala – 6:00 am
Quote:Chief Anchor Song Bai: Chancellor Huang spoke just minutes ago from the National Conference, let's hear what he had to say.
Quote:Chancellor Huang Zitao: Good morning. I have just spoken with the Governors of Shu and Han Province, as well as my cabinet ministers and military officials. We all agree that typhoon Yutu poses a serious threat to the people of Southern Indrala, and we strongly urge people to heed the mandatory evacuation order. We ask that citizens put their safety and the safety of their families first by moving to safe ground. To assist with the evacuation, the Indralan Armed Forces will be dispatching 2000 more reserve troops to Shu and Han. Today serves as yet another example of the profound bravery of our men and women in uniform as they selflessly run toward the storm. We will have much more to say soon but until then, I pray that everyone will stay safe.
