Touring Valruzia: Your local guide through Chynberg for outsiders

Chynberg is the largest and most geographically dramatic region of Valruzia, a land defined by its towering peaks, vast highlands and glacial valleys. Spanning 630,600 km² – the same size of the entire nation of Istalia, including its island part –, Chynberg alone occupies more than a quarter of Valruzia’s total landmass, yet it remains — paradoxically — the most sparsely populated voivodeship, with barely 16 million inhabitants and an average density of just 25 inhabitants per km² (≈ IRL Sweden). This extreme ratio between size and settlement has shaped everything about Chynberg: its culture, its economy, its politics, and even its national mystique. For centuries, Chynberg has been imagined as the "Wild Crown of Valruzia" — a realm of snowbound fortresses, wind-sculpted ridges and isolated and independent mountain communities.

Its capital, Hel, together with the historical town of Jeziorne Sady, forms a unique dual capital structure and together they amount for more than a third of the Voivodeship's total population, a percentage that goes up to 50% if we add its other big city, Bewierzow. The remaining millions live scattered through rugged counties, isolated valleys and highland plateaus where traditions survive largely untouched in what is widely considered to be the most conservative region in the nation. For locals, Chynberg is known as the "Isolated Giant" and "Valruzia's Barn", as it is the nation's breadbasket, a major resource hub with the second-largest deposits of crude oil and natural gas and the most conservative region politically, though its ideological heart is increasingly hybrid.

But beyond its strategic and political importance for some, Chynberg is a land of dramatic, rugged beauty, attracting visitors for its historic fortresses and unparalleled alpine scenery. If you are planning a trip to Valruzia and are eager to explore the country's mountainous backbone, or you are into mountain and countryside tourism, let this be your guide to this magnificent region.

A wide range of well-defined landscapes

Chynberg has three well-defined areas within its large extension: the east, dominated by Valruzia's tallest mountains; the Northwest region of the highlands; and the Southwest, featuring primarily flat lowlands and plains. Let's dive in a little bit in each part, shall we?

The East, the mountainous heart of Valruzia

This area is dominated entirely by the Krazgan Mountain Range, an immense geological barrier that features the highest peaks in Valruzia and is the primary reason for the Voivodeship's low population density.

It is here that you will find Grzmotboga ("God's Thunder"), the undisputed tallest mountain in the nation, alongside a cluster of other soaring peaks south to it. The sheer scale and ruggedness of the Krazgan Range make it famous for its demanding alpine passes and deep valleys.

For visitors, the East is the ultimate destination for high-altitude adventure, skiing and snowboarding, with its locations being very popular both in Valruzia and abroad. The Krazgan Range is a haven for expert mountaineers, offering challenging climbs and scenic, multi-day trekking routes through high meadows and glacial formations, as these mountains are the sources of several major Valruzian rivers. In summer, this place becomes crowded with hikers, mountain bikers and regular families keen to explore the glacial lakes and verdant valleys but in winter, it's the turn of winter-sports lovers who flock to the well-developed resorts to enjoy some of the best skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country trails Valruzia has to offer.

The Northwest highlands:

Covered extensively by highlands, the northwestern part of Chynberg offers a dramatic contrast to the towering peaks of the East. This is a vast, rolling landscape, dominated by the Northern Chynbergian Highland, which spans an impressive area. Opposed to the East, this region is characterized by rolling hills and expansive alpine meadows, making it an ideal environment for traditional farming and pastoralism, but is also used by the Valruzian and regional governments as a renewable energy hub thanks to the windswept ridges of the Northwest, so visitors here will notice numerous wind farms that have become an increasingly prominent feature of the skyline. But this area also houses geothermal projects, and natural hot springs and spas are located mainly in this region, with really affordable prices that visitors will not be able to resist, as they relax in these spas having a complete overview of the mountains and plains all around them.

This region is where one of the distinctive two capital cities of Chynberg is located. Jeziorne Sady. And at this point, you will probably ask yourself "why are there two capital cities?". Fair question. This was established centuries ago, as a territory as extensive as Chynberg, with a lot of mountains and great distances between the scattered villages, was very difficult to manage from a single central city – taking into account that the region's land is double the size of the whole Selucia. For this reason, two cities were named as the capital cities for the region: one in the north – Jeziorne Sady – and one in the south – Hel. This single centuries-old decision – that perfectly encompasses Chynberg's support of tradition and stability – is also to blame for the long feud between Jeziorne Sady and the city of Bewierzów, located more centrally and with a bigger population, which is showcased largely in sporting events and in local phrasings.

The Southwest:

In stark contrast to the mountainous East and the elevated Northwest, the southwestern part of Chynberg is characterized by primarily flat lowlands and plains. This geographical difference becomes apparent when one stands on the Cięcie mountain range, that divides the region in the two distinct sides from north to south, and is also to blame for the difference in climate between the two halfs of Chynberg. Is this part of the Voivodeship that contains the Bawierzow Basin, the second-largest deposits of crude oil and natural gas in all of Valruzia. Its fertile plains also contribute significantly to Chynberg's status as the "Valruzian Barn" supporting large-scale grain and livestock production.

While lacking the dramatic peaks of the East, the Southwest offers its own unique tourist attractions, more focused on the region's heritage and history, as it contains many of the most impressive historical fortress towns which once served as crucial defensive points against incursions from the south. These well-preserved towns provide excellent routes for history lovers. Many medieval and ancient markets can be located in them, with festivals being held all-year long. But it is also a perfect place for those who seek to disconnect for a few days or weeks, with its paradisiac valleys around its two main rivers, the Libard and the Turycz, which also gives name to Chynberg's largest lake – shared with Ruzia – the Turycz Lake.

Due to its vast extension, Chynberg borders no less than three international countries: Likatonia, Lodamun and Baltusia. Historically, this meant Chynberg was traditionally Valruzia’s most fortified region, a feature that can be easily perceived in many of its cities and towns, most of them grown around a main castle.

Natural and historical attractions

The Krazgan Mountain Range: Valruzia's roof

The Krazgan Range is the ultimate destination for high-altitude explorers, defining the East with its rugged, unforgiving beauty. As home to Grzmotboga and Plarix, the nation's highest points, the region demands respect. However, numerous guided expeditions are available for both peaks. Plarix Peak, while not the tallest, offers some of the most accessible yet challenging alpine experiences. Routes are strictly categorized by difficulty (from Class III to Class V climbing), and local authorities highly recommend securing an approved local guide, especially for technical ascents above the tree line.

But that's of course not the only activity you can do around there. Surrounded by wild nature, it is here where you can find and be absorbed by the beauty of its glacial lakes and river sources, as the vast water reserves of the Krazgan are the birthplace of the two major Chynbergian rivers, the Libard and the Turycz. The high mountain valleys are dotted with shimmering glacial lakes, such as Jezioro Grzmotu, which is famous for its intense blue color and is the starting point for several popular multi-day trekking circuits.

This remote, pristine environment supports rare and protected species, including the elusive Krazgan Mountain Goat and various predatory birds, including the well-known Valruzian eagle. Ecotourism here is strictly controlled: visitors must stay on marked trails, refrain from feeding any wildlife, and camping permits are only issued for designated, low-impact sites. Severe fines are imposed for environmental violations.

Castles and Fortresses

Chynberg’s history as a fortified frontier against external threats is cemented in its architecture. Many tourists are eager to do the "Historic Fortress Towns Tour", a detailed route promoted by the regional government to visit the vast amount of fortified cities and their historical castles all around the region. These communities, often strategically located on ridges or valley entrances, are major attractions, with towns such as  Wysoki Kamień with its completely preserved medieval rampart and guard towers or Slakie and its full-restored medieval castle often cited as the major and most impressive attractions. These towns host excellent museum routes detailing their military past, and routinely feature ancient-times markets and events.

Talking about ancient markets and festivals, if you want to understand the local culture, visiting them is a must. The town of Hradówka, in the Northwest, hosts two famous annual medieval battles – one for kids and one for adults – to give the start to their annual celebrations, and the winning teams get a symbolic trophy in addition to being crowned "Kings and Queens of the Town" for the whole year. Tourists are not allowed to take part, but the simple view of a full scale medieval battle recreation is worth the trip.

But beyond the large castles, the valleys are filled with smaller watchtowers and fortified farmhouses. Although these smaller sites are often privately owned their historical presence creates a distinct cultural landscape that tells the story of the region.

Major cities and towns to visit

If after your time in nature you feel like you want to return to civilization and to spend more time visiting Chynberg's cities, this is what we can tell you from them:

• The Southern capital and main city, Hel: If you have come here expecting a vibrant, always active city, you might be dissappointed. Being Chynberg's main capital city, it is home to over 4.6 million citizens – almost a third of the Voivodeship's total population –, and the city suffers a problem of youth-leak. Despite having the biggest university in the Voivodeship, many young Chynbergians choose to study in Ruzia or Valusia, and as such, the city is not known for college-parties or youth attractiveness. But despite this, the city is stunningly beautiful and, precisely because of the absence of so many "young revellers", many middle-aged couples and families choose it as their main destination for spending a few days or weeks in the region. Among the city's various museums, the Chynberg Archaeological Museum and the Pryetz Regional Art Gallery stand out, as well as the numerous parks and botanical gardens that dot the city everywhere. 
  
  But the city is also known for something else: it hosts the largest percentage of Yeudi population in the whole country – the same applies to Chynberg as a whole, whose percentage of Yeudi population doubles the next Voivodeship, Ruzia. As such, the city also features the Museum of Valruzian Yeudi History, and is a common place for Yeudis all around Terra to spend some weeks or days, as many of them also have relatives here. During its holy days and festivities, the Yeudi neighborhood completely transforms itself, and is not uncommon to see the Mayor of the city taking part in the celebrations. You can join, too! Valruzian Yeudis are much more open in terms of their religion than in other places in Terra, and that is clearly noticeable when one talks with them for some brief minutes.
  

• The Northern capital, Jeziorne Sady: Much smaller in size – 1.3 million citizens –, Jeziorne Sady has survived the passage of time pretty decently. It is here where the annual celebrations of the dual-capitality, when Jeziorne Sady was selected to act as a second centre of power for the Chynbergian lords to manage the Voivodeships, are hosted during the month of October. For such an special occasion, representatives from the 16 Chynbergian counties and the 3 cities meet there to solemnly read the decree of proclamation, giving way to the official start of the local festivities, which are also used as the Chynbergian regional festivity.
  

• The Third Wheel, Bewierzów: Despite being bigger and more populated than Jeziorne Sady, Bewierzów lacks the status of capital city since the dual-capitality was established many centuries ago. Perhaps for this reason, the city has tried by all means to make a name for itself, and although the political right is often the most voted force, it is the left that usually wins the majority of votes here. It is also well known in the region and in Valruzia as a whole as the regional capital of partying and music, with numerous festivals and events throughout the year. Its best-known festival, DECOFest, held at the end of August, brings together thousands of young people – and not so young people – on the outskirts of the city for a whole week of techno, house, reggae, pop and rock music that delights all music fans, and which is regularly attended by international artists, especially from countries as diverse as Kalistan, Egelion, Baltusia and Istalia.

But perhaps, the real charm of Chynberg lies in its countless rural villages and towns. This is the heart of Valruzia’s agrarian life, and with the boom of tourism, more and more visitors get involved in routes around the region targeting the more than 1,000 villages scattered across the landscape with their castles looking over them.

Chynbergian Gastronomy: A taste of the mountains and plains 

The cuisine of Chynberg is a testament to its status as the nation's granary and its rugged, high-altitude environment. It emphasizes hearty, simple, and locally-sourced ingredients, and you must expect dishes based heavily on grain, livestock, and dairy products. As the nation's granary, grain is paramount. Expect dense, dark breads (called chleb żytni in Valruzian) and a wide array of grain-based fillers. And you know what goes GREAT with this type of bread? Exactly, the region's famous cheeses, strong and aged. You can find a wide variety of them, from cow's milk, goat's milk, sheep's milk... and also with a wide variety of flavours: rosemary, pepper, truffle, pesto... and all of them taste simply delicious! No wonder why the are under a protected category, "designation of origin" ("Oznaczenie Pochodzenia", or OP).

Of course, the region is also known for its root vegetables, brought to the tables of all Valruzians directly from here. Potatoes, cabbage, carrots... they all thrive in these valleys and constitute the cornerstone of most stews and side dishes in the Voivodeship.

As Valruzia's most isolated region, you certainly won't find a lot of seafood here. Instead, look for rich, warming dishes adapted to cold winters and high altitudes, featuring traditional farming products and slow-cooking methods, such as the "Krazgan Pot" (Garnek Krazgański), a slow-cooked pork or smoked beef stew bulked up with root vegetables, cabbage, and often thickened with rye flour. The region also produces intensely flavored, dried "mountain sausages", as given the colder climate, preserving meat through curing and smoking has been always essential. Look in the stores for them, as they are perfect for traveles or to serve alongside this bread and cheese.

Due to the abundance of grain and potatoes, many dishes feature dumplings as the main carb, so we recommend you to look for savory these potato dumplings called Pyzy, often filled with minced meat, cheese, or mushrooms gathered from the mountains.

Another popular item in the agricultural lowlands are large, savory pies filled with cheese, eggs, and herbs, which are perfect for an easy, portable farm lunch and traditionally served as the food for shepherds and other groups during the periods they had to spend in the mountains. And obviously, if you want a tasty dessert, this region is where you will find a lot of milk-based desserts, the perfect sweet end for a full and savory meal!



Practical Tips for Visitors

Chynberg's isolation and unique geography, mostly defined by extreme altitudes and vast distances, require visitors to plan carefully. Keeping a few specific regional tips in mind can make your experience in this "Isolated giant" much smoother.

1. Climate: Expect extremes and sudden shifts

Chynberg’s climate is highly varied due to altitude, ranging from temperate in the lowlands to severe alpine conditions in the Krazgan Range. This means:

-Cold winters: The region is known for its harsh, cold winters and significant snowfall, especially in the mountains, making winter sports a major draw.
-Altitude impact: In the Krazgan Range and high passes, temperatures can drop sharply, even during summer days. Be aware of rapid changes in mountain weather, and always check beforehand to avoid danger.
-Recommendation: Always pack layers (synthetic and wool) and be prepared for sudden weather changes, regardless of the season. Waterproof and warm footwear is essential, particularly if planning to hike or visit the high country.

2. Currency and prices

The official currency, as in the whole country, is the Valruzian Peso (VPO).

Payment: Card payments are widely accepted in the main cities (Hel, Jeziorne Sady, Bewierzów). However, in the vast network of rural towns, traditional markets and smaller mountain lodges (bacówki), it is highly advisable to carry sufficient cash, as card acceptance may be limited. For this reason, always carry with you enough money equivalent to at least transportation forth and back to one of the main cities.

Pricing: Chynberg tends to be a highly affordable region, generally considered the least expensive Valruzian region partially due to its lower salaries. Prices are lowest in the rural markets where you buy directly from cooperatives.

Tourist Tax: In contrast to its neighboring Kampania, Chynberg does not enforce a regional-wide tourist tax, but local municipalities and especially smaller towns may have small surcharges on accommodations, so check with your hotel or host beforehand.

3. Safety and local respect

Chynberg is considered a very safe region, with crime largely limited to basic petty theft in crowded urban areas. However, there are unique regional considerations you might want to know:

-Mountain safety: Never hike or climb in the Krazgan Range without appropriate gear and a clear route plan. Due to the rapid weather changes and isolation, always inform someone of your itinerary. Local mountain guides are highly recommended for non-experts, and are always available in nearby towns and villages.

-Cultural respect: Chynberg is politically the most conservative Voivodeship in Valruzia. Visitors will find a strong emphasis on traditional cultural values, so always be polite, especially with older people, and show respect for cultural norms to ensure positive interactions. Big cities tend to be more socially liberal, but still tradition plays a big role in everybody's day-life.

Despite being the most conservative Valruzian region, don't take that as a sign of religiosity. Official polls show that around 46% of the Chynbergian population is atheist or non-religious, and the most followed religion in the region is Yeudismwith over a quarter of its population.

4. Language

In urban areas, most young people and workers in the tourism sector in the main cities speak good Luthorian, so you will not have a problem there. However, in many small rural communities, Luthorian knowledge may be very limited or non-existent, so always carry with you a dictionary to ensure good understanding of basic words. Chynbergians are very helpful and prone to tourists, so they will do their best even though they cannot fully understand you. Remember that learning a few simple Valruzian phrases, such as "dziękuję" (thank you) or "dzień dobry" (good morning), is always highly appreciated and can significantly improve the warmth of local treatment and interaction.

5. Respect for nature and wildlife

This is crucial across the entire Voivodeship, especially in the high mountain areas and near the river sources. Strict environmental regulations are enforced, so do not leave marked trails, do not feed animals and do not pick plants. Fines for environmental breaches are high and strictly enforced by regional authorities. The alpine meadows and passes are home to a variety of mountain-adapted wildlife, so maintain a respectful distance and follow all park ranger instructions.

Transport: How to move around Chynberg

Due to the mountainous terrain and vast size, the Chynberg Voivodeship has the lowest density of transportation infrastructure in the country, although modern governments have vastly invested in its upgrade. Travel here requires more planning than in any other Valruzian region.

1. Arriving in Chynberg

Air travel: Most visitors arrive via the region's main air hub, Hel International Airport, although there are two more airports in the other two main cities, Jeziorne Sady and Bewierzów.

Rail: High-speed rail connects the Central Stations of the three main cities to the capital Nowogard in Valusia but for the rest, the routes are often less direct than those serving other Voivodeships. Kampania is only directly accesible via Jeziorne Sady, whilst all routes to Gryfit and Ruzia pass through Hel. Perhaps surprisingly, it was not until recently, when Chancellor Szymon Nowik approving the Railway Network Upgrade in 5646, that Hel was connected to Nowogard and Keziorne Sady to Szary Kamien, Kampania's capital; while Bewierzów and Jeziorne Sady lacked a proper connection too until the RNU. For these reasons, these lines are brand new and with high-speed trains, and the region has a regionwide ticket – ChynberGo – that allows tourists to take all intercity trains for with a single ticket at the cost of 150 VPO.

2. Travelling between Cities and Towns

-Car rental (Recommended): Due to the low density of public transport and the vast distances, renting a car is highly recommended for the freedom to explore, especially in the mountain. However, be aware that many rural and the same mountain roads can be challenging, narrow or partially unpaved. However, most rental car companies are aware of this issue, and the cars are already prepared for it.

-Railroads (Scenic): Key railway routes exist, including the famous, functional mountain cargo railroads that traverse the Krazgan Range. Public transport services utilizing these lines are less frequent than freight, but they offer unparalleled scenic views.

-Buses: Public transport between small villages and towns exists but is less frequent and reliable than in other Voivodeships, especially on weekends and national holidays. However, the regional government is actively investing and working on the upgrade.

3. Urban transport

In major cities: Hel, Jeziorne Sady, and Bewierzów have reliable bus networks and some urban minibus services, with tickets available via vending machines or mobile apps. However, walking remains the best way to explore the compact historic centers. The local city halls have installed tourist city buses to go through the main attraction points, and many of the more rural towns and villages have information points to help tourists!
