A loaf of bread
December 5736
Can't seem to figure out what strikes me the most. The 9-year-old kid gulping a slice of bread like it's candy, or the dad's look. A broken man, wrinkles all over his face, barely 30 years of age. His late 20s side still lingers, visible only when the kid looks at him. A treasure of his enduring self that he keeps only for his son, the only other member of his exiled family.
Most kids of the West know nothing of life, except vanity. Even the offspring of the East, flashing their dance moves and cow-eyes on the world's social media, bickering about the self-created superficial troubles of the present as if they are the inventors of history's "firsts".
And while the East accuses the West of hypocrisy, they dance together on the world's theatrical stage of righteousness, barely able to hold down a foreign policy or communications doctrine that matters. And for all their bigotry, this man and his kid - and so many broken families and starving kids, roam the lands of Southeast Majatra like exiles in their own homes.
Khyber is a Turjak; his son, a Kansari bastard of a woman who was either Istalian or Dundorfian. Khyber could not remember. He was a bartender in the southeast, 9 years ago and nights, sometimes, ran wild with the bravado of Western visitors and tourists, who remained blissfully unaware of Solentia.
"She was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen", he says, in a broken Dudmani accent.
Of course, the woman has abandoned Khyber, for he was filth in the eyes of the civilised West. And no "civilised" woman of the East ever looked at him, either.
Khyber does temp jobs in logistics and manufacturing and lives in a van, with his son.
"Urzana Kargar", is what people call these impoverished Solentian nomads like Khyber and his son; "cheap labor" of the West and the East. They are the 9th generation of nomad workers.
And the sycophants of the world continue to shout and scream their ideals of equality, prosperity, peace and justice; year after year, decade after decade, century after century.
Khyber smiles, for the first time during our interview, at the word "Adalat".
Justice.
