In Early May of this year, the Socialist Party of Kalistan nominated Neveras politician and member of the Carrangus family Elga Bjorksdattir-Carrangus to be the Party's candidate for President.  This move both ends the SP's endorsement of the RFP's Presidential platform, and signals a further increase in the political position of the Bretheren in the SP.  Elga Bjorksdattir is closely affiliated with Jonas Bennots-Plum, the recently elected Head of the Party.  The nomination makes Fredricka Carrangus' term a lame duck term, as it is assured that if Bjorksdattir is elected, the RFP's candidate will be named Head of Government.

Bjorksdattir has vowed not to touch the strict separation between secular state and religion. "My religion is between myself and God.  I am not here to tell anyone what they must believe or what they must not believe.  The Truth is in us all, and only we can ascertain God's mission for ourselves."  She has publicly committed to the Ban on Religious Parties, and has ensured that the SP will not become a Bretheren Party.

Politically, Bjorksdattir is a hardlined Socialist, and advocates for further nationalization of the Economy.  She studied under Nationalist professor Dr. Howard Bellamy at Doceus Rex, and campaigned for the nomination on the platform of strengthening the National Service Program to cover all industry outside of services.  She additionally has called for the expansion of both KALNAPECO and ODEN.  If elected, Bjorksdattir will move Kalistan away from the dual economy.

Ananto socialists have expressed some concern with the potential of Mainland Socialists rising to positions of power within the Party.  The last time this occurred was during the Third Crisis six hundred years ago, as the Political wing of the Party was eclipsed by the Party's militia.

Running unopposed for President, Socialist and Society of the Bretheren Member Elga Bjorksdattir-Carrangus is elected President in all Districts.  Bjorksdattir has said that her primary initiatives will be directed at further nationalization of the economy and further opening of Kalistan to the International Sphere.  Her inauguration speech is printed below.

"Comrades and Friends.  Greetings from the Socialist Party of Kalistan!  I would like to take just a moment to thank all the people who voted in the recent election and worked tirelessly for our campaign.  Not only did Kalistan elect a Socialist as President for the first time in several hundred years, but we also secured a Socialist majority in a competitive election and elected Socialist governors in both Vrassa and Suldanor Districts.  The Socialist Party should be very happy with these results as they represent a clear mandate for our Party's Platform this term!

"Comrades and Friends.  With the help of our Committed Party Leaders and District and Local Committees, we shall now look forward to working with the new Prime Minister, Zachery San Xavier, from our legislative Partners in the Revolutionary Freedom Party, to ensure that the interests of Kalistan are promoted both at home and abroad.  Nationalism will be a bit of a challenge, but using programs which are already in place, beginning with the National Service Program, the Food Bank, ODEN and KALNAPECO, we should be able to broaden public control over additional sectors of the economy, starting with banking, health and education.  We have already directed the Foreign Minister to move several affinity treaties to a vote in the Assembly, and they appear to be on their way to passage, and we will restore Kalistan's traditional international orientation in the ever important NBC Ban Treaty and the Neutrality Accord.

"I also feel the need to point out the debt of gratitude that I owe to members of the Society of the Bretheren in Kalistan.  As the election was being conducted, the number of monthly meetings of the Society of the Bretheren passed 100, with an average of 42 members per meeting.  This number represents more than 100% growth in the Society in the past year.  While the numbers themselves do not explain the Socialist victory last January, they are important, because the members of the Society formed a very important activist bloc within the Socialist Party of Kalistan.  These more than 4000 individuals worked effortlessly for the Party in their various District and Local precincts.  They canvassed neighborhoods to encourage people to come out to vote.  They conducted polls and research that was vital to our campaign.  They staffed campaign centers and made countless telephone calls.  And they were responsible for more than 50 petitions to the National Government on a number of important initiatives such as the NBC ban that we expect to protect with Treaty this coming term.  While it is not official government policy to promote the work or the effort of any religious organization, I would be personally remiss if I didn't offer my sincerest thanks, appreciation and encouragement for the continued efforts of members and attenders of the Society of the Bretheren.

"Finally, I must also personally thank my personal Friend and Comrade Jonas Bennots-Plum for the encouragement and assistance he rendered this campaign.  It was Bennots who first inspired me to consider a run for President.  Bennots is a devoted Socialist, even at the expense of any sort of personal life, and campaigned non-stop for the three months leading to the National Elections.  This radical commitment to the Socialist cause is rare in even the most ardent partisan, and Bennots will continue to lead the Party with our support for foreseeable future.  It is my hope that Bennots will take some time off now that the election is over, but we have been unable to prevail upon him to do that so far, and therefore, I assume he will continue to dedicate his efforts going forward.

"This term, we hope to work with the Finance Minister to lower taxes, if possible while continuing to fund our national priorities.  We hope to see a financial bill which finally reflects additional funding for ODEN and KALNAPECO which were passed into law several years ago, and at the same time, a bill which reflects reduction in the military budget due to the abolition of our Nation's nuclear, chemical and biological forces

"Finally, we wish to express to the world that Kalistan is open and welcoming to all.  If any person, for any reason feels the need to flee their country, they may come to Kalistan.  When they get to Kalistan, they will be given immediate aid and assistance with integration in Kalistani Society.  As soon as they are ready, they may claim citizenship in Kalistan without qualification or test, and may become fully fledged members of our society.  Kalistani citizens are exempt from extradition.  Kalistani Citizens may own businesses in Kalistan.  Kalistani Citizens are entitled to all of our civil liberties and rights that attend citizenship.  Send us your tired, your poor, your lonely, your huddled masses, and without exception or reservation, we will give them warmth, shelter, nourishment, medicine and education, a place to work and a place to live and a place to grow.

"We thank you for your attention, and would like to close with a moment of silence and reflection...  Thank you Comrades and Friends."

With that, Elga Bjorksdattir replaced the microphone and left the podium to finish her preparation to assume the role of Member of the Socialist Party of Kalistan, President of the Republic.

We welcome the representatives of Trigunia to Kalistan on their upcoming tour of the region.  Trigunia has long held a special place of favor among Socialists, who remember the disastrous mission of Socialist partisans to Keymon 700 years ago and the willing shelter offered to us in Trignuian safe havens.  We understand that the topics of discussion on the upcoming visit will be oil exploration and exploitation, as well as diplomatic and cultural exchange.  Kalistani citizens are encouraged to make our Trignuian Comrades welcomed and treat the representatives to all that Kalistan has to offer, while they remain with us on our National soil.

The visit represents the first major visit of a foreign power to Kalistan in many decades, and the Kalistani government has denoted a willingness to make the most of the visit, for the advancement of Kalistani economy and culture.

Socialist Partisans Attend Polar training in Trigunia

Socialist Partisans arrive at the top of the world for six month training exercise with the Trigunian Military

Socialist Partisans from the standing Socialist Party Militia, serving in their role as auxiliaries of the Kalistani National Military, arrived in Zarvospol, Trigunian Empire, this week for a six month deployment at the top of the world.  While it may seem odd for Kalistani Militia to engage in cold weather training, given the subtropical climate of most of Kalistan, SPok Militia spokesperson SSgt William Halsey responded: 

"The training cycle we have embarked upon does not anticipate our deployment to colder climates.  Instead, we are learning from the Trigunian military, while teaching them our techniques and displaying the tactical advantages of the Militia.  The Socialist Party's militia is one of the oldest in Kalistan, and represents a significant portion of the Kalistani Military during peace time.  Consequently, the irregular forces can offer a wide range of military options which are not widely practiced by regular military.  The Cold weather training offers us an opportunity in return-  Kalistan may find itself in a support role in any place around the world, especially when evacuating refugees from war torn areas.  With this training, Kalistan will be able to manage unfamiliar climates and terrain and will increase our humanitarian effectiveness."

The cold weather units Socialist Militia will remain deployed until June and will then return to Kalistan.  Trigunia has offered to deploy units to Kalistan to learn Irregular tactics in the mountainous terrain of Neveras, and is expected to arrive within the year.

President Bjorksdattir Declares 3922 a "Year of Celebration"
Sporting, Cultural, and Industrial Expositions planned for entire Year

The President of the Republic has declared 3922 a "Year of Celebration."  The celebration will be designed to celebrate Kalistan's new orientation toward the world, and to welcome the world to Kalistan.  The President released the schedule of events for the coming year as part of the announcement.

The Festivities will kick off in Kaliburg, Ananto with a Trade and Industrial Exposition, which will feature technological advancement in Kalistan, as well as the modern features of Kalistan's National Economy.  Kalistan's Foreign Ministry will extend an invitation to all nations to attend and host exhibitions at the Expo.  The Expo will run from January to March.

In September, Kalistan, in association with ODEN, will host an International Cultural, Art and Music Festival in High Bong, Neveras.  The Cultural, Art and Music Festival will feature theater, poetry, painting, sculpture, fiber art, and a weekend music festival, with folk music on one stage, international music on the Second Stage, and Alternative Rock on the Third Stage.  Kalistani supergroup, The Revolution, will headline the show.  The International Culture, Art and Music Festival will happen between September 6th and September 20th, and will be free to all.

Finally, in December, Suldanor will host the Winter Phase of the International Sporting Exposition.  The phase will consist of most water events, as well as track and field, Team Sports (Basketball, Baseball, Football) and Demolition Derby.  The Winter Sports Exposition will run between December 4th and December 21st, 3922.

The President also noted that Socialist Party Partisans are expected to return from Trigunian exercises, and Trigunian forces will reciprocate by visiting Kalistan for Mountain and Guerrilla Warfare training leading into 3922.  The President has also suggested that an expanded exposition schedule is expected, to include possible events in Trigunia.

Year of Celebration in Review

Last Year, Kalistan welcomed the world to various events during the Year of Celebration.  President Bjorksdattir opened the year off with the Kaliburg Trade and Industrial Exposition where new developments in industrial and high tech products were displayed to the world.  Scientists and Engineers exchanged ideas and Kalistan's major development coming out of the Exposition was the announcement of a new lubricant, which offers zero friction and zero thermal breakdown at superheated temperatures.

In September of this year, High Bong in Neveras hosted the High Bong Music, Culture, and Art Festival.  Acts and performers from all over the world drew record crowds to the venue for the week long event in the cool high country along the East Wall Mountains.  Kalistani Artist Diego Jones-Ananto took best in show for her mural on Kalistani cultural progress, while prizes in the international category were awarded to artists and sculptors from Luthori, Lodamun and Indrala.  The Festival was highlighted with music playing on three stages during each evening and night of the show.

In December, the Year of Celebration finished up with the International Winter Sports Exposition in Suldanor.  A World record in the 100m dash was set by Talmorian Runner Isaac Olofuote, with 9.17 seconds.  Kalistan finished first in boating, freestyle Ocean swimming and Demolition Derby events.

Over all, during the entire year, Kalistan received visitors from every nation in Terra, and more than 2.5 million people visited all events total.  President Bjorksdattir declared the celebration an unqualified success and thanks all participants and visitors for making it so.

Approximately 1000 Trigunian regular forces were welcomed to Kalistan this month to begin
a 6 month training cycle with RSMoK

The Socialist Party, and elements of the Revolutionary Socialist Militia of Kalistan, the Partisan arm of the Socialist Party welcomed the arrival of 1000 Trigunian regulars to Kalistan this month.  The long awaited visit is the Kalistan portion of the military exchange program inaugurated a year ago when Socialist Partisans deployed to Trigunia for arctic weather training.  While the RSMoK has been tight-lipped about the training that will be given to Trigunian forces, Socialist Party officials have publicly confirmed that the training will include urban warfare, psychological operations, improvised munitions construction and disposal, and conditioning.  The Mountainous regions of Neveras and Suldanor will provide deployment theaters for the training, both in high altitude operations, and in jungle warfare training.  The SP has confirmed that chemical and biological training will not be conducted within Kalistan using live munitions, though simulations will occur.  Furthermore, command and control and logistics in irregular combat operations will be highlighted in the training.  RSMoK spokespeople neither confirmed nor denied the SP's statement on the training, which is expected to last 6 months, and will include the monsoon season in Suldanor.

SP Leaders Confer to discuss election and coming events in Kalistan

The SP held a Special Conference on the State of the Party last week.  Included were Party Leader Jonas Bennots-Plum, President Elga Bjorksdattir-Carrangus, and high ranking representatives from each District.  Bennots spoke of the difficulty SPoK had in the previous election, which saw Bjorksdattir re-elected as President, but SPoK lose the majority in the Assembly.

Among the more controversial topics covered during the Conference was the drift of the Party Leadership toward the Society of the Bretheren.  Suldanor Socialist Gregory King argued that many people in the Party are concerned that the SP has been hijacked by a concerted effort on the Part of the Society of the Bretheren.  But others in the Party, including Bennots-Plum, reminded leaders that the Bretheren were still a small group of Kalistanis, representing less than 10000 people out of close to 100 million people, and the religious opinions of the leadership have nothing to do with the platform or the operation of the Party.  The criticism extended to the President as well, but at the end of the day, two efforts to oust Bennots-Plum from the leadership of the Party failed by, and were confined to a small handful of individuals, one of whom was actually censured by her District Party as soon as her statements against the President were published.

For her part, President Bjorksdattir held a short retreat to prepare for the eventual visit of the Trigunian Tzar.  The Tzar is the highest ranking foreign official to visit Kalistan during the President's Administration.  The President of the Republic met with members of various sectors of the Kalistani economy to determine the degree of support could be provided for the Tzar's visit.  Additionally, The President was assured that Kalistan would go out of its way to make the Trigunian state visit a memorable one for all, and further strengthen the ties between Kalistan and their new friends in the Trigunian Empire.

Ananto Bretheren open New Meeting House

Last week, the Kaliburg Monthly Meeting of the Society of Bretheren in Kalistan held its grand opening of its newest meeting house.  Official numbers of Kalistani Bretheren have topped 10,000 for the first time in recent memory, and the Meeting in Kaliburg, which began meeting just a few short years ago has already outgrown its original meeting place in the basement of the headquarters of the Socialist Party of Kalistan.  Beginning early last year, the Kaliburg meeting hired the architectural firm of Olaf and Korgan to design an environmentally friendly structure to house the Meeting, as well as space to serve as the Headquarters of the Kalistan Yearly Meeting.  The result was quite impressive, even by Kalistan standards.  The project was completed early in April, and the building was finally open to the public on May 1st, where the Monthly Meeting held its first business meeting.  Scholars across Kalistan have hailed the Kaliburg Monthly Meeting House as a "technological wonder" due to its many advanced features hidden behind a rather plain interior and exterior decor.  Dr. Henricka Ericson of the Architectural School of Kaliburg National University hailed the building as among the most technologically advanced buildings in Seleya.

More than 200 Kalistani Bretheren met for an hour of silence and then an hour of Business

The structure is made of 100% sustainable building materials.  The exterior load bearing walls were of cob and plaster construction, which serves as a natural all weather insulation.  Interior walls are vented to allow lightweight and modular deployment of the walls, as well as ensure constant airflow throughout the building.  This building technique will ensure the durability and versatility required by the Monthly Meeting and any other organization seeking to use the structure.  The building is lit with natural light during the day, and solar powered batteries at night, to ensure that the building does not add load to the power grid.  In the winter months, heating, when required will be produced by solar powered radiators, which serve to heat water during the day and circulate the water throughout the walls and floors of the building.  During the warm season, the building is cooled by a natural heat sink, which cycles water warmed by the air into the earth, returns cold water and circulates the cold water through the walls and ceilings, naturally cooling the interior of the building.  This heating and cooling process will lead to a comfortable climate controlled 70 degrees, with 45% relative humidity inside the building at all times.

The building is also carbon positive.  Planted all around the building are deep thickets of bamboo, which will slowly be replaced as shady oaks and elms rise into the sky.  Additionally, the roof is designed as a green roof, with a community garden established already this spring.  The fresh food produced in the garden through Kalistan's three growing seasons will provide ample food for all who need it, and will supplement the local branch of the Food Bank system.  Ultimately, these methods help the building do its part in reducing environmental destruction, as well as carrying on the mission of Social Justice and Equity in Kalistan.  The Meeting asked that no parking lots be planned for-  the goal being to reduce car traffic to and around the building and encourage the use of non-motorized vehicles and public transport.  The Socialists in Kaliburg were able to add an extra stop on the city's bus routes to ensure that people were easily able to make if to and from the building at all hours of the day.

When asked about the cost of the building to the meeting, the Clerk of the Meeting, Diane Jefferson said:  "Well the figure stands at something over 23 million Rubles, but much of the cost was offset by recycling of waste from the construction, as well as generous grants from the Architecture firm, the Socialist Party, and the various meetings across Kalistan.  We should also note that no public money was put into the construction of this building, and the land was purchased at fair market value from the City of Kaliburg."

It is expected that much of the space in the building will be rented to various charities and social organizations in the coming years.  For example, the Kalistani Food Bank program has already leased office space in the sublevel of the building as a new Center of Operations, and other space has been earmarked for a potential HQ of the Terran Brethren General Council, which is said to be in the beginning stages of organization.

In a major move, the Socialist Party's Leader, Jonas Bennots-Plum has proposed two major pieces of legislation. The first, aimed at answering demands from the population for change in government policy was called the Socialist Rectification Act. It includes, among other things, an effort to restore the Constitutional Provision which supports Presidential Prerogative in calling for new Cabinets. Bennots answered reporters' questions with regard to the Prerogative:

"No, this is not just to help Elga. The Prerogative is hundreds of years old, and through lack of attention, was changed a few decades ago. We envision a time when the SP won't be unchallenged in the Head of State Election, and when that day comes, we will promote the Prerogative as much as we do now. Promoting it hasn't been much of a priority because we have observed it informally since returning to Government anyway. This law merely puts it in writing."

The second law, which is far more comprehensive, aims at fulfillment of the President's campaign promise to move the country toward nationalization. The Socialist Nationalization Act adjusts state control in several key sectors of the economy with the aim of improving state activity. Bennots said of the bill:

"In many cases, it is absolutely unbelievable that the state has not established complete control. Take, for example, power generation. We have long held that energy is nationalized, and yet power generation is partially in private hands? This does not make sense. And in other areas, like gated communities, we must ask ourselves: Why should the Republic be involved in building and maintaining gated communities, when those gates serve merely to keep certain people out? They should all come down! Meanwhile, we would like the Government to leave sectors where it really doesn't belong, such as Stock Markets. If individuals want to gamble on stocks of privately traded companies, let them do so. We do not regulate other forms of gambling in this Republic, we shouldn't regulate gambling on the fortunes of private companies either."

The Socialists in the Assembly cheered the Opposition Leader's words, while MAs of the RFP were largely silent. The vote will last, in both cases, until February 3925, after which time, the Socialists will begin a new campaign for office.

Trigunian State Visit a "Great Success"

As the Trigunian forces training in Kalistan were nearing the end of their deployment, the citizens of Kaliburg were treated to a special event this month, the like of which few can remember.  The event was the state visit from another head of State.  Citizens of Kaliburg are used to seeing the President of the Republic and various leaders of the Governing Parties out and about in the Capital, but it is a rare day when the head of state from another nation visits Kalistan.  The result was pandemonium.

Kalistani citizens from the far corners of the Republic, as well as those who lived in Kaliburg, turned out for the event, which began with a fly over of four pairs of hyper-advanced Trigunian jets fighters, which roared at near supersonic speeds just above the tops of the buildings in the Capital.  The sound of the jets peeling off over the Anantanese Sea was complimented by a barrage of Artillery fired over the harbor in a mock dual between Kalistani and Trigunian forces.  After the display of military hardware, the forces from Trigunia and elements of the the Revolutionary Socialist Militia of Kalistan, the Partisan arm of the SP, paraded through the streets and past the Government reviewing stand.  The units were accompanied by martial music, and the Partisans, from from their training in Mountain and jungle warfare, displayed their finest close order drill.  In the reviewing Stands were the Kalistani Minister of Defense, and representatives of the Tsar of Trigunia's General Staff, as well as several important political dignitaries from both countries.

Finally, the highlight of the parade arrived and travelled down the Avenue des Kallis in Kaliburg:  The Tsar of Trigunia, Tsar Ivan I, rode in a vintage Kalistani automobile along with the President of the Republic, Elga Bjorksdattir-Carrangus.  The two heads of state waved at the assembled masses, which totaled more than 100,000 people.  All the assembled crowd cheered as the car passed, and it seemed that Kalistan, as a whole, erupted to welcome the Tsar "home."  Said one member of the crowd:

Seeing the Tsar of such a great nation as Trigunia really warms the heart!  He seems like such a nice fellow.  We have had the opportunity to watch some of his speeches both on KNTV, as well as on satellite and the internet, and my family has really studied some of the things he has accomplished in his short time in office.  A truly remarkable individual-  this is something me and my family will remember for a long time!

The Parade ended at the Historic Headquarters of the Socialist Party of Kalistan, where the President and the Tsar met for two hours in a closed door summit.  Spokespeople for the President reported that the topics discussed were increased Trigunian involvement in the Kalistani energy sector, closer military ties and the possible basing of Trigunian soldiers on Kalistani National soil, and a reciprocal state visit by the President to Trigunia.  Currency and finance issues were also briefly discussed, and the President even tentatively mentioned ODEN to the Tsar, though the Tsar reminded the President that Trigunia's laws disqualify it from membership in the Cartel.  The Spokesperson also reported that the President was interested in discussing the reports she had received of members of the Society of Bretheren in Trigunia.  The President has previously expressed interest in potentially organizing Brethren meetings worldwide, and as of late, Kalistan has become a central focus for growth in the Bretheren Faith and Practice.  The existence of meetings in Trigunia could be yet another tie between our two nations.

At the end of the meeting, The President of the Republic made brief public remarks which substantiated the statement of the Spokesperson, and announced that the Tsar would remain in Kalistan for a few more days while the last of the Trigunian forces are redeployed back to Trigunia.  The Tsar then took his leave of the Party Headquarters and traveled with his entourage to Trigunia's temporary encampment near Kaliburg National Harbor.  The Tsar has reportedly enjoyed many of the things the exotic Republic of Kalistan has to offer, but there has been no official comment on which aspects he or his Nationals sampled.

In all, the Tsar's Visit had been something which will go into the history books as among the most successful visits to Kalistan that anyone can remember.  It lays the groundwork for a good longterm relationship with our Comrades at the Northern point of the world!
