President of the Republic Delgado, in his first Major press conference, discusses the developing Aldegarian Crisis

President of the Republic Olaf Delgado held a press conference today regarding the developing crisis in Aldegar, in central Selaya.  This is a transcript of the President's prepared remarks:

Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press.  The situation in Aldegar is rapidly escalating.  National intelligence reports clear describe a deteriorating situation between Aldegar and its southern neighbor, Saridan.  What is worse than an apparent border conflict is the vast list of great nations which are arraying themselves on one side or another of the conflict.  The hegemonic order which has held peace in the world and has contained several bush fires seems to have fallen apart.  The permissive environment is particularly explosive, and therefore represents the most serious threat to Kalistan's security in decades.

Working with the Premier, Socialist Party Leader Borris Donner, I have ordered the departure of the Kalistani Auxiliary Navy to the international waters off Aldegar.  They will patrol the Aldegarian Gulf, to monitor the situation as it develops and to keep an eye out for any potentially hostile activity in the region.  Furthermore, we have asked the Socialist Party to make the Fifth Brigade of the Revolutionary Socialist Militia of Kalistan available for national service overseas, in the event that intervention becomes necessary.  This force consists of 2 fast assault battalions, an fortified artillery Regiment, a Motor transport battalion and a logistics battalion.  The Socialist Party of Kalistan has officially activated the rest of its militia, who will serve in support of the Regular Kalistani National Force, which I have ordered onto High Alert.

I want to make clear here:  Kalistan is a neutral nation, and therefore will do nothing to exacerbate the already volatile situation in Aldegar-  No regular units will see combat in Aldegar, under any circumstances.  But neither will we shy away from our duties to defend our own national interests, should the need arise.  A secure Northern Selaya is obviously in our national interests.  A republican Aldegar free of great power influence is also in our National Interest, because great power advancement into Selaya brings it one step closer to our own shores.  Our fate lies with Aldegar and its friends.  I will now take questions, and I thank you for your attentiveness to National Matters at this crucial time in our Republic's History.

Several Reporters offered questions at this point, and the President offered candid answers which demonstrated the gravity of the situation in Kalistan.

President of the Republic addresses Naval Officer's Association last Week

The President of the Republic, Olaf Delgado, made a speech at the Naval Officers Association Monthly Meeting in Suldanor District last week, and officially confirmed what other sources have been reporting-  The Aldegar-Saridan crisis, which nearly brought the world to the brink of war, has cooled off.  Various official representatives, speaking to the local press, described the state of the crisis as being "in overture" while Aldegarians and Saridanians begin to make efforts at avoiding war.  The President roundly praised the Aldegarian Foreign Affairs team for their efforts and has stated that Kalistan fully supports the efforts toward peace.

As the Kalistani Auxiliary Navy, which has been deployed to the Aldegarian coast for two years now makes preparations to return to Kalistan, the President offered words of high commendation to the unit and its commanders.  The President described the presence of the Kalistani Auxiliary Navy as "crucial" for the de-escallation of the tensions around the Canal zone, and the efforts at making peace.

"As Kalistan is the only country, to our knowledge, that actually deployed any units directly to the crisis, it is not too great a stretch to proclaim that our efforts pushed the two rivals toward the peace table to end the crisis.  I would go so far as to say that the arrival of our Auxiliary Fleet provided the necessary impetus to get the two sides to begin looking for a way to resolve their issues.  The bravery and dedication of the women and men with the Kalistani Auxiliary Navy is beyond reproach and are in keeping with the highest moral standards of our Republic.  The Auxiliary Navy was crucial to the peace process, and we are happy to have played our role to such a satisfying ending.  Our commanders deserve the thanks and appreciation of our entire nation-  It is a true mark of distinction to be able to bring force to resolve a conflict, rather than inflame and exacerbate it."

The President also noted that the Kalistani Auxiliary Navy has been ordered to return back to the Anatanese Ocean, for home duty and for resupply.  The Kalistani Auxiliary Navy will remain near the homeland for no less than six months while it is fully resupplied, and its members are offered the opportunity to catch up on leave in ports across Kalistan.  The Auxiliary Navy will also conduct naval wargames with the Regular Naval Forces and the Socialist Militia's small fleet of fast boats.  There have been calls in influential circles to roll the KAN into the Regular Navy, but both the President of the Republic and the Minister of Defense both independently and categorically refuted that statement in public.  Said the President at the NOA meeting: 

"The Kalistani Auxiliary Navy was established by an act of the Assembly to allow Kalistan to participate in world affairs without involving threats to our homeland or our regular naval services.  They are entirely self supporting and self-governing.  They allow our nation a degree of flexibility that others do not possess-  a way to be both active on the world stage, and at the same time, not threaten other nations or our neighbors.  We resolve the security dilemma.  This is their job, and this job, the sort of job which would deploy them to the Aldegarian Gulf, is never finished.  But they will not become regular military."

Founder of Kalistani Yearly Meeting, Religious Society of the Brethren dies at age 79

High in the mountains of western Kalistan, not far from the Balthusian frontier, a person key to the history of modern Kalistan died yesterday morning at his home.  Jonas Bennots-Plum, founder of the Society of Brethren in Kalistan, 79, originally from Neveras District was discovered to have died in his sleep by his grandson.  Bennots-Plum, who retired early from Socialist Party politics to pursue work with the Society of Brethren in Kalistan had been in poor health for the last couple years, and had recently been diagnosed with a rapidly failing aortic valve.

Over Bennots-Plum's life, and as a result of his tireless work, the Society of the Brethren (originally known as the "Bretheren" in Kalistan, but later changed to accord to those members in foreign lands) has become the plurality faith in Kalistan.  More than 46% of Kalistan's faithful attend Brethren meetings in every district of Kalistan, and in Ananto, the majority of the population of the district identify as Brethren.  The dramatic growth of the non-creedal society has corresponded with Socialist Party hegemony throughout the Republic.  The Party has encouraged the relationship with the Brethren, and have adopted some aspects of Society democracy in internal Party Politics.  During the recent era of decentralization, Party functions were often co-sponsored by the Brethren and vice versa.  Bennots-Plum, several members of the Government and one President, the Late President of the Republic Elga Bjorksdattir, all identified with the movement, and within a few short decades, the Society of Brethren became synonymous with socialism in Kalistan.

For his part, Bennots-Plum became reclusive after leaving politics, and especially after the death of his Friend, President Bjorksdattir.  In a 3968 interview, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Meeting, Bennots-Plum gave a rare interview. 

"I decided that public life was not the way for me to achieve a full understanding and a practice of the will of God.  Being a Friend these days is something that is fairly popular, and if popularity brings people to the Brethren, well, I am for that.  But I hope the Society resists the temptation to become a civic religion.  We have had great success with the faith and practices of the Brethren here in Kalistan, but if it becomes something that people do out of some sense of duty, then it will lose its power to offer people a channel to hear the voice of God in their daily lives.  I don't know if a person can balance the two worlds.  I know I couldn't, so I opted for the life of a Friend, and put the public life down.  I realized that I was called to the work I eventually spent my life doing-  politics is for someone else."

The Neveras Community Monthly Meeting, mourning the passing of Bennots-Plum last night

After leaving public life, Bennots-Plum married Felicity Genniveve, who was 12 years younger than him.  Together they had 4 children, who each had several children.  Felicity Bennots died three years ago, and Bennots-Plum has lived alone ever since.  But he was by no means a hermit.  Locals knew him as a kindly old man who spent his days volunteering at various social activities.  He was a regular in the Food Bank here in Neveras, always willing to work to keep the shelves stocked with food, or to lend a hand in the community garden.  Bennots-Plum helped build his own local meeting House, along with men and women who were decades younger than him, and most of whom had been born into Monthly Meetings that he had helped to start.  As late as Last month, with a failing heart, Bennots-Plum donated time and energy to help a local farmer harvest a crop which was in danger of being destroyed by a storm.  He was a true philanthropist, and dontated all of his time and money to the service of humanity in Kalistan.

History may have stopped paying attention to Bennots-Plum, but he will be sorely missed by his friends and family, and will be mourned by more than 30 million Kalistani Brethren across Kalistan.  The President has requested that a week of memory and public service to be observed in the Republic.  Rest in Peace, Friend Bennots.

Following the death of noted Brother Jonas Bennots-Plum, the All-Kalistan Yearly Meeting, as the Kalistani Yearly Meeting is now called has reorganized the Brethren General Conference, which is centered in Kaliburg.  The new All-Terran Conference of the Society of Brethren has adopted the AKYM's Faith and Practice, and has invited Brethren from around Terra to begin working together. 


The Old BGC Building in Kaliburg, once thought to be a miracle of modern design, has since been surpassed throughout Kalistan and is no longer home to the AKYM
It will continue to serve, however, as Headquarters of the All-Terran Conference of the Society of Brethren

It is currently unknown how many Brethren exist in the world:  It is known that the AKYM has about 33 million members, and several years ago, Kirlawa was said to have 1% of their religious population who are Brethren.  Efforts to work with Kirlawa to bring a closer association between to two Yearly Meetings has not yielded much in the way of cooperation, and sources at the ATC have stated that they are not sure whether any Brethren even exist any longer in Kirlawa, or if they moved to Kalistan.  Additionally, it is believed that some 40 years ago, the Brethren in Trigunia was run out of the country, and it is likely, if this is so, that they did make their way to Kalistan.

The ATC has opened their doors in Kaliburg, and look forward to discovering more about the practice of this religion that is rapidly becoming associated with Kalistan, in other places around Terra.

President Delgado launches strongly worded protest against what he terms "international piracy"

President of the Republic Olaf Delgado addressed the Nation today in regards to details trickling into Kalistan about the wanton destruction of a KALNAPECO petroleum tanker carrying 1.25 billion Rubles worth of crude aboard off the coast of Aldegar.  Below is a transcript of his speech:

Comrades, thank you, and please be seated.

Beginning Last week, we received reports of a blatant attempt to hinder and neutralize Kalistani shipping on the high seas.  We have very few details at the moment, but we do have several facts which we can release to Kalistanis today:

First, A KALNAPECO ship, Kalistani Tanker Eastern Republic, openly bearing Kalistani Colors and enroute to Aldegar as per the terms of our friendship treaty with Aldegar neared the Aldegarian Gulf less than a week ago.  The tanker was in a normal shipping lane around the north coast of Selaya, through the South Ocean, and was approaching Aldegar from the North West.

At some point, the ship was illegally boarded by unknown assailants who attempted to commandeer the ship.  The Ship's pilot, and several members of the ship's crew attempted to barricade themselves in the Pilot house of the tanker, and promptly called Kalistan for assistance.  Republican Security reports that details were sketchy, possibly the result of electromagnetic radio jamming.  Kalistan security reports that it attempted to warn the Tanker about known Trigunian presence in the area, but received no response.  After that point the radio went dead.  The Trigunians have taken responsibility for the destruction of the ship, but also suggested that others, possibly members of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Hutori, were also involved in the incident.

Once the Trigunians opened fire on our neutral commercial ship, events transpired which led to both the destruction of the tanker and a Trigunian Cruiser.  It is assumed, from the Trigunian statement, that Hutori naval units in the area destroyed the Cruiser, but it is unclear why.

This incident is nothing less than high seas international piracy!  Kalistan lost a total of 42 Kalistani citizens and a tanker carrying more than a billion rubles worth of Kalistani National Petroleum on board.  Besides causing a severe ecological crisis off the coast of a major nation, this disaster has caused a fundamental rift in the relations of Kalistan and her neighbors.  We will not rest until these pirates are brought to justice!  These thugs must be dealt with.  Kalistan must not standby while our peaceful commercial vessels are attacked with impunity in international waters!

I have ordered the Kalistani Republican Security Bureau to launch an immediate investigation.  At this moment, RSB agents are headed to the area to begin inspection.  We have also dispatched teams to Petrovgrad and Bekenial to seek answers from the Trigunian and Hutori Governments.  Kalistan will accept nothing less than a public admission of both government's roles in the incident and full compensation, including compensatory damages for the lives of 42 Kalistani merchant Marines as well as the tanker and the loss of petroleum revenue.  We will back up our demands with our Naval Power, if we need to.  Kalistan does not accept other nations using our shipping for target practice.  We will strike back if we do not receive satisfaction- we call the entire world to the side of the Just, to the side of the Unjustly aggrieved, to the side of Kalistan.

Additionally, I have ordered the Defense Department to provide me with an audit of our Naval assets and the elevation of Naval preparedness in the Anantanese Ocean to High alert.  We will also suspend oil sales through the Mad Dog and South Oceans for the foreseeable future.  This is all.

Kalistani President Responds to Trigunian and Hutorian Accounts of Piracy

President of the Republic Delgado visited the future site of Port Elga, in Sulari, Suldanor District and discussed the loss of the Eastern Republic

Surveying the beginning stages of the construction of the new commercial port facilities, called "Port Elga" after the assassinated former President of the Republic, Current President Delgado took a moment to respond to international accounts of the hijacking and destruction of the KALNAPECO tanker Eastern Republic.

"The KRSB interim director, who has led the investigation into the destruction of our shipping capacity, has advised me that the Trigunian account, which assumes full responsibility for the destruction of our ship, appears to conform closely to the facts.  Naturally, we have some disagreements with their report, but those details fall within the range of minor disagreements of intention, rather than disagreements about the facts of the event.  However," the President continued. "Let me stress, emphatically, that we disagree with many of the assertions of the Hutorian Government stated in the Bekenial Dispatch.  The submarine the Hutorians were tracking was a Kalistani submarine, monitoring scientific phenomena under the ice sheet.  It is a coincidence that we were north of Hutori when they began tracking us.  And our submarine's presence there was unrelated to events occurring in Hutori at the time.  To deal with our research submarine, Hutori dispatched multiple Sentinel-class Nuclear Submarines, which chased our submarine south and into the Mad Dog Ocean.  Our Submarine, due to prolonged operation under extreme circumstances while trying to evade submarines whose intentions with our vessel were unknown, suffered catastrophic equipment failure which would lead ultimately to the destruction of the Kalistani submarine, contacted the KALNAPECO tanker for assistance.  Eastern Republic responded, and saved the lives of 16 Submariners just moments before the hull of the ship collapsed, and the submarine was obliterated. 

"Once the Kalistani submariners were aboard the tanker, Hutori, whose submarines had chased Kalistan's ship into a trap, launched a commando team from some other assets they had, not coincidentally standing by in the immediate vicinity, who proceeded to hijack the Tanker.  The pilot of the tanker, who had not yet met the hijackers, continued to sail the ship toward Aldegar, hoping that once docked, they would be able to deal with who he believed to be pirates, and contacted Kalistan to inform them of the hijacking of the tanker by unknown elements.  It was at that time that not one, but four shots were fired by the Trigunian cruiser, and the tanker was subsequently destroyed by these and additional surface fire and secondary explosions.  The Hutorians admit that they still hold a Kalistani National in their possession, and we are entirely unsure of that person's whereabouts, but we have certainly not been able to reacquire this Comrade.  Nor have KRSB made any contact with, or ascertained the wellbeing of this co-national, and we doubt that this will be resolved as long as Hutori continues to misrepresent their part in the destruction of our Tanker."

The President announced that The Government of Kalistan has accepted Trigunia's offer for compensation for their role in the affair as a sign of their admission of responsibility, and will be dispatching the political team to Petrovgrad to officially re-establish relations with the Trigunians, which were severed decades ago following the death of President of the Republic Elga Bjorksdottir.  He also stressed that repair of relations with Hutori are contingent upon their acceptance of responsibility for ultimate death of our two crews on the high seas.  The President stressed that Hutori cannot use "defense of a civilian vessel" as an excuse for firing on the Trigunian Navy, because they wouldn't have needed to protect the Kalistani vessel had they not commandeered the tanker in the first place.

The President also made some brief comments on the building of Port Elga, which is being built at Sulari.  The Port is designed to provide a major commercial hub for the Kalistani Mainland and the hinterland regions of Balthusia and Lodamun.  Currently, nearly all of Kalistani's imports and exports first travel to Eveari and then are shipped locally to various hubs in Kalistan for overland distribution, but when the new port facility at Port Elga is completed, shipping costs will be reduced dramatically.  Port Elga joins the KALNAPECO shipping assets already in Sulari, which have been being provisionally used for commercial shipping over the last 50 years, though not very efficiently.

Port Elga will be one of the world's most technologically advanced ports, with fully mechanized loading/unloading capacity, a massive container storage facility, fully modernized rail linkage, and overland linkage.  Port Elga will be able to easily handle the largest container ships deployed in Terra currently, and the port has been designed in such a way that as container ships grow in size, the port will be able to grow to accommodate larger ships through modular growth.  The President also noted that the construction of air commerce facilities connected to the port is in Sulari's long term strategic plan, but the construction of the port itself is the first priority.

Defense Minister Orders Audit of Armed Forces- Kalistan

Minister of Defense, Militia Colonel Mica Elias-Davis, today ordered a full audit of all assets currently held and used by the Kalistani Republican Armed Forces.  Colonel Elias has ordered the audit due to recent discrepancies with regard to the production, fitting and deployment of Kalistani Assets abroad.  "This audit comes not in response to any particular episode,"  Col. Elias stressed, "but more in a desire to move Kalistan closer to accepted practices by global powers, specifically the practices of the Organization of Terran Armed Forces.  If we are to be respected in the world, and not have our ships serve as target practice, other nations must know that we are prepared to back up our grievances on the world stage."

The Minister of Defense stated further that Kalistan has opted, at this time, not to join the OTAF, nor accept their protocols as governance for Kalistan, but held out the possibility of joining the agreement in the coming years, as Kalistan brings itself in line with the protocols promoted by the Organization.  "Based on their categories, and our current understanding of Kalistan's military capacities, I would describe Kalistan as a regional power, simple because the operational range of our navy covers the entire Anantanese Ocean, which itself touches the coast of three continents, and few nearby countries have ever challenged us in this regard.  Again, using OTAF categories, Kalistan has a projection-based land and naval warfare doctrine, with aims at locally hegemonic power in Kalistan, Ananto and the Anantanese Ocean, while maintaining the ability to operate overseas in support of other groups for a short time.  Through our audit, we shall see if our assets correspond to our military doctrine, and if not, we will remedy that through increased acquisition in the National Defense Plant."

The Minister finally stressed the fact that additional, non-Republican assets added much of the projection capacity to Kalistan's military.  "The overseas actions have been largely contingent on the ability of the Party Militias and the Auxiliary Navy, both which operate on their own doctrine quite outside of Kalistan chains of command, to provide Kalistani presence overseas.  The Revolutionary Socialist Militia of Kalistan has cooperated with the organs of national defense to project Kalistani influence into other nations, which allows Kalistan itself to remain outside of the struggle, and the Auxiliary Navy which operates nearly entirely on its own revenues while away from the Homeland, allows Kalistan to remain engaged in affairs at sea.  The Militia and the Auxiliary Navy are thus far the exclusive external purchasers of weapons, ammunition and armaments, including ships, from the National Defense Plant.  Therefore, it is also important for us to know what they have."

The report is expected within a year, and the Ministry has promised an executive summary will be eligible for public dissemination through the Kalistani Press.

Brethren Caucus wins vote of No Confidence; Calls for Early Elections
Poppy Smith-Bennots to become Next President of Kalistan

In a stunning move which has been described as a "coup" by the dominant Internationalist faction of the Socialist Party of Kalistan, the Government of Kalistan under long time Premier Boris Donner lost a crucial "No-confidence" vote in the National Assembly.  Following the first no-confidence vote which gave Donner his walking papers, the Socialists demanded the resignation of President of the Republic Olaf Delgado.  Following a brief standoff between Socialist Militia Forces and Kalistani Regulars at the President's office in Kaliburg, Delgado relented and read a brief concession speech.  His resignation was effective immediately.


New Socialist Party Head and Provisional Prime Minister of Kalistan, Juan Carlos Estevez

The Socialists proceeded to elect a new Party Leader, Juan Carlos Estevez, who is the current head of Kalistani ODEN.  Estevez accepted the job of bringing peace to Kalistan.  His primary backing came from the Brethren Caucus in the SP, who are demanding a reduced role for Kalistan in world affairs.  Citing the recent destruction of Kalistan's oil tanker as evidence of overreach, Estevez has vowed to reduce Kalistan's military, to end the authorization for the Kalistani Auxiliary Navy, and to dramatically reduce the role for the Kalistani Republican Security Bureau, which he claims is ultimately responsible for the deaths of the sailors aboard the Eastern Republic.  Estevez' younger brother was one of the crew members who died aboard the vessel.  In all, Estevez has promised that Kalistan will return to its role as a peace maker in the globe, and stay out of the affairs of imperial powers.  "Yes, we will keep fighting," Estevez said.  "Fighting for Kalistani values at home and abroad.  Fighting for tranquility on the high seas.  Fighting for the acceptance of Kalistani products and culture in other countries.  Fighting for respect as a peace maker, not a war maker in all corners of the land.  We will double down on our commitment to ensure that Kalistan becomes a name synonymous with the finer joys in life, the least and most base of which is war."


The Incoming President, Poppy Smith-Bennots holds a PhD in Public Policy

As his first act as provisional Prime Minister, Estevez called for new elections for President of the Republic.  Given the hegemony of Socialists in Kalistani politics, the next President will be Poppy Smith-Bennots.  A 33 year old post-doctoral fellow in Public Policy, Smith-Bennots has served as adviser to the Minister of Industry and Trade for 3 years.  Smith-Bennots also has ties to the Society of the Brethren and is a direct heir in the Bennots political Dynasty through her father.  Smith has accepted the nomination of the Party and will stand for a provisional election in August, which will ratify her as the next President of the Republic.  Smith has declared her intention to work closely with the Government to reorient Kalistan back to the Anantanese Ocean and away from troubles in far off lands.

Finally, much of the government was excused due to their affiliation with the Internationalist tendency within the Party.  The only Minister who was retained was Smith's old boss, Minister of Trade and Industry, Frieda Carrangus, and the Minister for Health and Social Services, Dr. Jena Pepper.  Both Ministers are affiliated with the Society of the Brethren in Kalistan, and both frequently found their ministerial priorities neglected as Kalistan focused on world affairs.  Other new comers to the Government include Militia Corporal Milicent Grognard, as Defense Minister, and Henrietta Allen in Foreign Affairs.  Members of the Society of Brethren in Kalistan make up the majority of the Government of Kalistan.  The new Government bill will be moved in the Assembly, following the Presidential Election. 

The shakeup puts the Nationalization Bill in jeopardy, as several members have expressed a desire to vote against it, as well as severely limit spending on Defense.

Former Director of Republican Security, Joanne Fredrickson, in retirement

Following the election of President of the Republic Poppy Smith-Bennots and the naming of the Provisional Cabinet mad almost exclusively of Brethren, the Nation's top spy announced her retirement.  After a closed door meeting with the President, Director of Republican Security Fredrickson was asked by reporters if she planned to retire.  She answered simply, "Yes..."  before departing the Presidential Offices.

Later, Fredrickson made the following statement with regard to her retirement:

I have decided that, after a long directorship at the Republican Security Bureau, it is time for me to move on. I have been in this position for over 40 years and my tenure in office has seen many ups and downs.  Kalistan faces many international crises at the moment-  We are looking at downsizing our naval and ground forces, and Republican Security has never been more important than now.  Kalistan needs a steady hand at the helm, and regrettably I am no longer confident that I can provide the Security Bureau the leadership that it needs.  I have recommended to the Provisional Foreign Minister that my replacement be Captain Twilla Carrangus, still in Hutori, and that she be installed as soon as she returns to Kalistan.  Carrangus represents the finest in National Service, and when she returns, she will have represented Kalistan honorably abroad for several years.  I look forward to staying involved with the intelligence and diplomatic community, and finally playing golf.  Since moving to Kaliburg all they seem to have around here is Demolition Derby...  I wish the President well and wish my successor luck in her new post, and thank you all for your patience and good will during this transition time.

The Provisional Foreign Minister has confirmed that upon her return, Carrangus will serve as Interim director until a permanent Director is confirmed by the Assembly.  The President of the Republic had no comment on Fredrickson's retirement, which may be seen as an example of the bad blood between the incoming Administration and the KRSB.  The President has indicated that she intends to seek the revocation of the authorization of the Auxiliary Navy and a dramatic reduction of Kalistan's international presence, to the chagrin of Security experts in Kalistan.  The move by Smith-Bennots is said to bring Kalistan into conformity with Brethren Principles.

Naval Captain Twilla Carrangus returned to Kalistan yesterday. Upon her return, Carrangus officially ended her visit to the Federal Republic of Hutori, where she served as Chief Commissioner of the team dispatched to settle outstanding issues with the Federal Republic.  Upon arriving back on Kalistani soil, Captain Carrangus offered the following statement on the settlement:

"The Imperial Republic of Kalistan and the Federal Republic of Hutori have resolved all major outstanding differences between our two nations relating to the sinking of KALNAPECO Tanker Eastern Republic.  We traded admissions with regard to the military nature of an experimental submarine belonging to Kalistan which the Hutorians were tracking, and their illegal boarding of the Tanker.  We also acknowledge that Hutorian commandos, once aboard the Tanker did in fact act with the aim of rescuing stranded Kalistani Nationals, to the best of their ability, and we express our appreciation for their efforts on our Merchant Marines' parts.  In exchange for these admissions, Hutori has agreed to purchase a significant amount of Kalistani National Petroleum, a deal which was authorized in lieu of direct compensation for the loss of our vessel and which we deem to offer a complete resolution of the conflict between our two Nations. 

"Hutori and Kalistan still disagree on minor details, but in all, Kalistan considers the matter closed.  Additionally, this amicable and mutual settlement forms the foundation for possible discussion of closer relations between Kalistan and Hutori.  Finally, we stress that we view this settlement as exhaustive, and it should bear no weight on ongoing discussions between Kalistan and Trigunia, nor does it have any relation whatsoever to any settlements between Hutori and Trigunia.  In all, the direction of the President of the Republic has been fulfilled with this settlement."

Following the press conference, Carrangus was shuttled to the National Assembly, where the new Foreign Minister of Kalistan, acting on the request of the Premier of the Republic confirmed Carrangus as the second Director of the Kalistani Republican Security Bureau.  Carrangus shall oversee a complete overhaul of the Bureau and establish transparency as a norm.  This move follows the expressed desire of the President of the Republic, Poppy Smith-Bennots, to conduct a complete and transparent audit of the Kalistani Armed Forces.  In accepting the Directorship, Carrangus resigned her Naval commission.  For her service, Carrangus was awarded the Republican Service Medal, the highest civilian award authorized by the Republic.  In accepting, she dedicated her award to a Kalistani named Juan Juarez, about whom Carrangus was unwilling to speak at length.
